Generally, canon lore and characterization is a skeleton that you have to build off of and around when you're running a campaign. Players can surprise you in all kinds of ways, so without meticulous planning and a reasonable ability to fly by the seat of your pants, you're going to get caught flat-footed by the choices the people at the table make ("what's the Drow high priestess's favorite food?")

No i understand your point there and i may be an outlier but its been a very long time for me since any of the groups im in or run have used anything with more than a very loose frame working for campaigns so an "official" lore change up to me seems very.....remote i guess is the way to describe. like the game book rules are one thing but dm rules always overrule if its an established bit. so theres nothing to stop anyone who runs a game from going hey these are the basics of the settings here a quick note sheet and move on.
