It was more hype of having the really loud, angry Gordon of Hell's Kitchen. Gordon had two years of Hell's Kitchen prior to Kitchen Nightmares, so US audiences were already used to "FUCKING DONKEY" as opposed to the UK audiences being used to "okay, let's take a look at your financials and things we can cut". US audiences also love extreme transformation shows. The UK version only makes mild changes in comparison.UK Kitchen Nightmares may be my favorite reality show. US Kitchen Nightmares is bottom-of-the-barrel trash. I was incredibly excited when they announced they were doing a US version, and immensely disappointed less than a minute into watching the first episode.
As for Jack's TV debut: If it was a cooking competition as he said, it most likely was Chopped. They would have pitted Jack against Babish and Food Wishes in a "Battle of the YouTube Chefs"....and Jack would have been immediately destroyed in place. He tries to smokescreen by bringing up Guy Fieri shit and saying he doesn't respect the host, but we all know Jack would make some ugly ass abomination and be exposed on international TV.
