Let's pretend for one moment that he does die before the election, just for the funsies. What happens then? Will the nomination revert to option number 2, aka Bernie Sanders? Or will his running mate automatically replace him just the way Vice-President is supposted to step in after the Big Man in the White House chokes on a piece of matzo? Ironically any alien contact with Earth would go along the ways that They Live played out:

Aliens arrive in secret, cutting deals with select members of the elites to treat Earth like the first world treat the third world: a place to steal natural resources the aliens need. The elites approached get access to alien tech and medicine and get to rule Earth as proxies for the aliens plus means to neutralize rival elites not part of the alien/human alliance. Alien tech is also filtered down to the poor and middle class in drips along with alien psy-ops stuff used to keep the population under control and passive. And once Earth's puppet regime is firmly in place, the aliens will start actively mingling in the public in disguise and treat America like a resort town assuming they take the stance that they are going to slowly strip mine our natural resources instead of grabbing everything in one go.

The problem with that idea is that as one guy pointed out a few posts ago, if they have the tech to get here they likely have advanced enough tech to get all of the shit they need through easier, less messy methods that don't involve pissing off a barbaric species of ape. They'd also have the tech to terraform a planet so the idea that they're here because earth's green doesn't make any sense either.

It's why I think if the UFOs really are aliens, they're just trying to dodge getting hit with a bill for internet access. They're pirating our shit!

Anyway, this thread is starting to resemble the inside of Joe Biden's head. Back on topic, I'm now at about 80% confidence that there's some plan to "reset" the US dollar. Maybe that's a new global digital currency that the wealthy will be buying into and the US dollar becomes a currency for the non-owning class. Maybe it's something else. But the printing of money and the debt relief plans etc. are so obviously unsustainable long-term, I'm finding it increasingly hard to believe this is just panic and pandering on their part. Though if it is, that's darkly hilarious given how much all of us critics are looking for a hidden master plan.

There's this bit in a William Gibson "Sprawl" novel where he mentions that "in many places, cash was already illegal". When I read that in college I thought that was the most absurd thing. I mean sure in the context of the novel there was a logical consistency to it but I just couldn't see a day when you could ever not spend cash. I think before I pass away this will start to become a thing.

The answer to fixing the student debt crisis isn't to give free money to dipshits. It's for people with student debt to form giant class-action suits against these universities for devaluing their degrees by debasing themselves with whiny activist bullshit that gives their graduates a reputation as potential liabilities for any company that hires them.

Exactly. There are many solutions I would support in fixing the debt crisis - dipping into university funds, having some sort of interest-reduction system if they work for underserved areas, etc. Basically anything except "the taxpayers who are productive will pay for it."

It's galling to have put so much work into getting scholarships and stipends so neither I nor my parents would have to pay a dime and then have everyone else get it paid for too without earning it. Agh.

It's laying the groundwork for what's likely to be loss in the Supreme Court vaccine mandate case in the next two weeks. Get out ahead of it now, deflect the blame, and maybe reduce the impact such a loss would have. And if the court cucks (which is possible), you can only go up public perception-wise

In short, more or less tacit admission that nothing else outside of signing off on further boosters and and providing resources to state-level programs can be done federally.

Feels like it's giving the anti-mandate side a slamdunk, because any official statement is considered evidence. It gives the Court a much easier justification to slap it down when the people in the case admit they can't fix it federally. All they have to do is say, "We took them at their word, no federal mandates," and the Court maintains legitimacy because the WH admitted it had no case.

I don't know why they'd do this other than trying to keep the Court sort of happy for some other goal down the road.

I play a shitload of Stellaris, and oddly enough most of my playthroughs either seem to be as benevolent-ish trade federations or evil megacorps, and also as raid loving spcae Vikings.

Here's an alien first contact scenario that I think is novel and a more lighter example than the one depicted in They Live - What if humanity is contacted by an interstellar civilization that isn't some Star Trek-esque altruistic Federation nor a galactic empire looking to conquer and enslave us but a galactic scale mega corporation/trade federation that is only interested in seeing the Earth as a new emerging market to buy their crap that nobody needs? Having purely capitalist motives and seeing humans as nothing more than new nascent consumers would definitely smooth over diplomatic relations with governments while understandable in human terms, and especially moreso if they're willing to pay a fair prices for resources and willingness to engage in alien foreign investment. The Earth would probably be besieged by alien management consultants trying to make a quick buck, but at least it beats alien armies arriving with dreams of conquest. Also better to be viewed in their eyes as a line in some alien balance sheet under the heading of "new markets" than "new slave worlds". It would be awesome as well if it turns out all galactic civilizations end up developing some form of digital currency tied to energy and it wouldn't be too hard on our end to patch our own cryptocurrencies to use with theirs.

Also the technology and cultural transfer would be massive, especially if their rivals start to show up and sweeten the deal to trade with them.. During the 1800's the Plains Indians would play arms runners against each other to try to get better deals on arms and ammunition if they refused to hand over what they wanted and I could see humans doing the same.

This basically confirms that the CDC is not acting in the interests of public health anymore (if they were ever doing so at all during this pandemic is another debate entirely). Viruses don't magically have shorter lifespans by arbitrarily-enforced guidelines handed down by the cathedral. I suspect that they have factored in the current labor shortage and know that stunting the economy further during an infections spike will draw the ire of politicians and business owners alike.

Alternatively, this is an admission on their part that Omicron is indeed a less severe strain, something that everyone paying attention for the last four weeks has been able to determine for themselves.
