Ok I am a big Pete fan, so if it sounds like cope, its probably cope, but I see him as more of a body modification addict. There was a period in the 00's when I think he created something that was actually beautiful, but stupid doctors and stupid nature got on the way. It killed him too.... He had body dysmorphia. His plastic surgery addiction started (according to him, anyway) when his nose was broken in a fight in the 80's and healed "askew", or whatever you want to call it. That was the reason he wore an eye-patch in the music video for You Spin Me Round. He had surgery to correct his nose, and from there on he just spiraled deeper and deeper.
I think part of it was that he was strikingly handsome and famous during the 70s and 80s. Lynne, his ex wife, said in a BBC4 documentary that he used to get bothered by the amount of attention he'd get from both gay men and women. He also got kidnapped and raped as a child. I think making himself into something else was a way of dealing with that... but it seems like he was always interested in playing with presentation and perhaps the nose job just set him off.
Honestly this feels like exactly the reason even LGBT people don't take FTMs all that seriously. I haven't met a single one that didn't have some personal story suggesting they just don't want to live with the vulnerability of being a woman (or in some cases wanting to be "the guy" in a lesbian relationship) but you never see them "performing manhood" as much as MTFs "perform womanhood" or whatever. Their performance of manhood (or whatever they think it entails) never seems to go beyond cringy online exchanges of calling each other "man" or "bro", but their general attitude even in writing immediately outs them as female nonetheless.
One thing that seems to combine a lot of the historical trannies is that they're casually aware that women are leaner and slimmer than the average man, so they do a SHITload of excercise.
