Anime News Network (ANN), Christopher Macdonald & Co. - "Unbiased" Reporting on All Things Anime Related By Snobbish Quebec-Based Web Company. Acquired by Kadokawa.

I was there back in the day well over a decade ago, and it's always been that that bad imo. Zac was obviously a deranged spiteful nutcase in regards to how he moderated their forum in an attempt to control people's thoughts.

The commie SJW shit has also always been there as well as the anger at fanservice and moe. I remember one bad review they gave to a popular well-produced magical girl show that made a lot of people quit the site, and this was eons ago. Zac one time bragged on Something Awful about how he was fighting "gamergate" before gamergate was a thing, as in that he was proud ANN was a proto-SJW website.

It just seems his and the other founders' insanity has transferred to other people. The fact they hooked up with these anifeminist idiots was not a mistake. That's what they want for anime period.
Oh, believe me I know.
I remember the really condescending pod cast Zac had with one of the forum goers about moe, I remember a LOT of Bamboos shitty takes on fan service anime. But, at least she felt that way, both ways. It didn't matter if it was for guys or girls, she just hated fan service shows, period.

That's why I said it wasn't as bad, but it still wasn't good. And yeah I remember that even 10 some years ago, the site had a hate bonner for moe and fan service but at least there was more open discussions, and even if it was just to be a snide prick, zac gave the moe fans a chance to be heard.
Now, it really is: you don't think like us?
Ban hammer for you!

As for the the Utena anime, funfact:
Utena and Anthy only are a couple because Ikuhara pretty much has a lesbian fetish and even admitted to that in an interview. 😏

Utena was also only created because Toei/Takeuchi told him "Hell no" when he, the leading director of Sailor Moon at the time, wanted to make a Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune spin-off/movie because he obsessed over them so much (probably because they're a lesbian couple). Wouldn't surprise me if he worshiped them, too, their appearance must've kept him working on Sailor Moon longer.

If that's true, it absolutely hilarious.
It makes me wonder if those writers at ANN found ot about these kinds of things would they still shill it?

Funny thing, I do actually like Utena.
It's one of my personal top 10.

Most likely yes since Ikuhara is a... strange individual.

That's him as Mars. Venus is Mamoru Nagano, creator of Five Star Stories.

I really like Utena as well (top 15 for me, if I had to venture a guess). I'm just sick of the "Utena is totes super qweer~ yaaaasss slay qween" shit that's been everywhere lately. I hadn't come across those until after I saw the show, but I almost didn't watch it because Tumblr salivated over it and gave me the wrong impressions of what it actually is about. It's not the gay utopia these assholes claim it is. It's actually shocking (or not) how these people miss the mark of its themes so much, they just really like staying inside their coffin of an idealistic world, don't they.

I see what what you did there.😏
But yeah, that attitude was part of the reason why I ended up dropping ANN.

Now I'm here on this thread, just laughing at how quickly they're losing relevancy.

Everyone's mileage varies, but Zac was definitely banning a lot of people back then, you just never heard from them again. I also don't think Zac was ever a real anime fan. As Beef pointed out, he was an Evangelion fan who wanted to be a movie critic. Most aspects of anime that weren't artsy fartsy like Eva annoyed him, so it's absurd he ever had any power in a supposed fan space like that. It would be like running a Star Wars website when you hate Star Wars for not being more like 2001: A Space Odyssey.

He was even more annoying when you realized his life story reads like one of those former mad fat kids who gets power and let's it go to his head in some kind of psychological revenge when he realizes he can now push others around and be the bully like figure everyone despises instead of the other way around.

Well, I started watching it because it had a reputation as a lesbian anime, but this was way before Tumblr, SJWs and retarded straight kids putting pronouns in their Twitter bios. The truth is the TV series doesn't have much yuri content at all because Ikuhara had a conflict with the female mangaka he was collaborating with who found lesbians icky at the time. He was only really able to push that more to forefront in the movie.

Overall, yeah, calling Utena an anime about LGBT is pretty dumb, because it really isn't about that for the most part. Most of the gay seeming stuff is there for aesthetics. It's more about postmodern symbolism driven themes like revolution/etc. and deconstructing the shoujo genre and traditional story tropes. Today, I find stuff that tries to "deconstruct" things extremey annoying, I even hated Cabin in the Woods, but Utena did this way before it was popular so it was at least an original idea when it came out and it's at least done in a way that is art-forward as opposed to the "look I know what deconstruction is" school of crap hipster film making.

Caitlin (the one who actually called it copaganda, unlike the rest who just cried about how boring it was. Of course if it would be one it was going to be Caitlin) gives the show a mention in her review.

Are cops even seen as negatively in Japan? If not this just reminds me of when Zac shat on the airsoft girls hobby anime because of AMERICAN gun politics
By her logic, Charlie's Angels, Cat's Eye, You're Under Arrest, Bonkers, and Cop Rock are all copaganda programing.

Imagine being so fucking sheltered you actually pretend to be anti-cop as a political stance. I'd like to see her walk through the bad parts of Detroit, St. Louis or Gary and see how long it takes to shit herself when the police don't come to her rescue.

I don't disagree with what anyone is saying about Zac.
I don't think he's some kind of misunderstood person.
He's a jerk, all I'm saying is that he at the very least, gave the semblance of being fair.
If you think that makes him worse than the new group, fair enough.
Him, Justin, and O'Toole where very bitter people on ANN. So is the current crop.
None of them want to understand that that the anime they loved so much was very niche and in no way properly represented the medium as a whole.

And for that new group, it wasn't even what they thought it was!

Neither group wants to admit the cool edgy thing that they thought was anime as a whole, isn't. So it just eats them up and makes them bitter biddies that they are.

To be honest, I just find that kinda sad...

So if you excuse me, I must go hug my body pillow waifu for comfort now...😏

That's probably why whenever I hear of genderspecials talking about Utena, I'm assuming they're talking about the movie because the TV show has much more "problematic" content (that the movie only tackles maybe one or two of) that they always bitch about, and there was no way they could've watched 39 episodes of that without melting. Then again, most of these genderspecials are also (ex?)fujoshis and the TV show at least has that going for it to make up for the lack of yuri content, but you never hear about that compared to the "uwu lezzies".

Yeah, the only implied same sex scene in Utena the TV series I can remember is when the three bishi males do it, which is pretty hilarious for a "yuri" TV show. The fujo stuff is kind of in line with this still being a shojo anime/deconstruction.

Still, you can ship Utena with Anthy if you want because they at least have the idealistic knightly relationship even if it only results in Anthy becoming an independent human being. Most of the screeching I remember was directed at Shiori, which is hilarious because the point of her relationship with Juri is deconstructing Class-S stuff from shoujo manga (relationships like the one in Maria-sama ga Miteru). That wouldn't have worked if Shiori wasn't a bitter resentful bitch towards her onee-sama. lol

That's fine if that's your experience, I'm not going to say your take is wrong but you had more tolerance for these people than a lot did. I think most people bailed on them way before the Vic blow-up and the non-screeching reviewers were kicked out of the site.

I'm just saying a lot of people were ban-hammered by him back in the day even if not everyone noticed it and Zac pretended like he wasn't doing it. He was not being fair if you went too far against his line. You were un-personed. Zac was obsessed with moderation and kept lists of people's IP numbers and internet handles to cross-reference if someone made a new account and posted similar opinions, and stuff like that. This is one of the reasons why it didn't shock me with what happened to him. The guy was a nut.

A lot of people were disaffected by this site and it didn't only start when cunt-bag took over after Zac bought it. One of the reasons why 4chan picked up, in combination with the Something Awful stuff that happened that birthed the site, was the way these idiots were managing their anime fan community. There isn't a coincidence here that 4chan took the banner of moe and made cute girl reaction images the center piece for weebs on the internet that lasts to even this day. That was a rebellion against the elitist snobs in the old guard, and it course ended up encompassing the whole fandom and leaving ANN in the past.

And yeah, I hate Justin Sevakis, Zac and Toole a lot more than the new people. It's because this new pack is up front about being stuck up SJW prudes with axes to grind. At least they are honest. The old guard was just as bad in every way and had the same exact opinions and biases, but hid it in their annoying snark, passive-aggressive petty behavior, double standards, etc. To me, it's like saying AOC is worse than Hillary Clinton. No Hillary Clinton created this world we now live in and that was her goal to pave the way for the AOCs, of course she is worse.

Justin, Zac and Toole are also the reason why Vic got targeted by this huge smear job in the way he did. They had it in for him for years as many people uncovered, and a lot of it was over the worst reasons imaginable. For example, that he was a Christian and had the gall to promote Christ in "their" space they wanted to mold with their godless commie ideals. If these people didn't hold petty grudges like they are infamous for, this whole thing may have went down differently.

This explains everything about why they hate the fandom deep down inside. They're basically disillusioned with anime because the titles they liked didn't represent the medium as a whole and aren't really being made anymore. So they're apart of something that no longer gives them legitimate joy.

But at the same time they've spent so much time being apart of the fandom during the early days, they don't really know how to move on and do something else with their lives so they're just sticking with it until the end.

Ironically enough, this one comic by Andrew Dobson (a webcomic artist lolcow) I believe pretty much summarizes how ANN feels about the anime fandom in general.

Wow.
For starters, I didn't even know about the ip thing, that is really scummy.
Like, I said, I knew Zac was a jerk, and that he was snide condescending prick, hence why I mentioned that pod cast, but that ip thing is just rotten.

I mostly used the site well, for news.
And I just lurked on the forums, I never participated in any of the discussions.
Zac would leave people alone if they disagreed politely with him, but ANN's first rule is: be polite.
So it doesn't surprise me if he used that rule and banned them at a later date for breaking it in some way or form.

I did know about the Vic thing in that , yeah they where talking about making the hit piece on him on Twitter, he even mentioned that in the forums a few times.
He would phrase it as, they where talking about his "problematic" behavior and how they needed to do something about it, trust me, I thought that was bull.
I left the site for good around the time Redo of Healer was simulcasting.
I really didn't like how they where treating people who where only saying the show was doing well in its circles.
That, and I got this weird prompt that felt like the site was trying to phish, those two things, made me finally leave.

I gotta say, the more you learn about some people, the less you wish you did...

Sad but true. Younger anime fans don't really care for old-school stuff, but just because the fandom's not the same as it was "back in my day" doesn't mean you can't continue to enjoy anime your own way. Behavior goes a long way, and they chose to be bitter about it and take it out on the current fandom instead of attempting to become more like historians to preserve the past for those who wish to seek it out.

Guess there may be a direct correlation between anime/narcissism and delayed social skills or development, or something after all.

In this very thread, you can find webcomics from ANN lampooning Vic from 2007 and, of course, the 2013 podcast interview Zac & Justin did with Vic (which is in the OP). In the interview, you can clearly tell the thing that chaffed them was Vic having his Sunday panels. Also, the intro for podcast episode has The Flintstone's intro line of "Have a gay, old time!" as a snub at Vic because "Christian Man Hates Gays" logic from the staff. So, ANN's staff have had a hate boner for Mignogna for a while.

Yeah, that is what's ultimately so sad.

Like hey, when magical battle high school anime started flooding in, I got annoyed at how much of it there was, but I went, oh well, I'll just focus on what I like.
These guys: let's mock and ridicule everyone who likes it until no one does!
And looked how well that worked for them huh?

To an extent I feel legitimately bad for them. Let's be honest, these people probably weren't just unpopular in high school they also had little to no friends to share their interests with because of how niche it was. After finally finding communities that liked the same stuff they did, they quickly found out that the specific titles they liked was considered niche even among them.

As a result they basically became bitter loners who can't relate to other people rarely if at all. This is probably why they instinctively didn't like Vic aside from his personal beliefs. Vic is a man who legitimately shows empathy and kindness to people which fans who have emailed him personally can attest. But these people are so bitter that they can't stop being bitter, even when someone is showing them actual empathy, they reject it automatically.

Part of it is the same complex that US male comic book fans have imo where they yearn for their "medium" to be taken seriously by the mainstream, critics, academia and other nonsense parties to the point it's suffocating and suddenly super hero outfits have to be "realistic," etc. when it was just goofy fun beforehand. It all goes back to extreme insecurity.

Also the old guard are extremely biased because they are snobs from America who didn't actually watch a lot of anime back in the day because they thought the only anime was what they could get on VHS at Block Buster. They didn't grow up in Asia where the kids who grew up watching old anime were not watching Akira and art-house stuff on TV but were watching anime for kids and otaku that did not take itself as seriously. The idea that old anime was vastly different in tone apart from maybe certain genres of OVAs is an incredible myth created by these outsiders who are talking out of their ass for the most part.

The mindset of the bitter old farts who started ANN was molded by an over-reaction to the George W. Bush re-election campaign the left had at the time where certain people were brain washed by the idea that evangelicals and Christians in general are all evil people who want to murder the gays.

It's all over the mindset of people like Justin, Zac, etc. They have no understanding of what Christianity is actually about or what people like Vic actually believe in regards to what he views as his relationship with Christ. I have to give it to Vic. He is definitely a good Christian role-model for putting up with these kinds of idiots' nonstop assaults on him without giving it back in kind on the same level. Maybe not the best idea in regards to strategy, but he's definitely a very good person.
