I was there back in the day well over a decade ago, and it's always been that that bad imo. Zac was obviously a deranged spiteful nutcase in regards to how he moderated their forum in an attempt to control people's thoughts.

The commie SJW shit has also always been there as well as the anger at fanservice and moe. I remember one bad review they gave to a popular well-produced magical girl show that made a lot of people quit the site, and this was eons ago. Zac one time bragged on Something Awful about how he was fighting "gamergate" before gamergate was a thing, as in that he was proud ANN was a proto-SJW website.

It just seems his and the other founders' insanity has transferred to other people. The fact they hooked up with these anifeminist idiots was not a mistake. That's what they want for anime period.

Utena was also only created because Toei/Takeuchi told him "Hell no" when he, the leading director of Sailor Moon at the time, wanted to make a Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune spin-off/movie because he obsessed over them so much (probably because they're a lesbian couple). Wouldn't surprise me if he worshiped them, too, their appearance must've kept him working on Sailor Moon longer.

Everyone's mileage varies, but Zac was definitely banning a lot of people back then, you just never heard from them again. I also don't think Zac was ever a real anime fan. As Beef pointed out, he was an Evangelion fan who wanted to be a movie critic. Most aspects of anime that weren't artsy fartsy like Eva annoyed him, so it's absurd he ever had any power in a supposed fan space like that. It would be like running a Star Wars website when you hate Star Wars for not being more like 2001: A Space Odyssey.

He was even more annoying when you realized his life story reads like one of those former mad fat kids who gets power and let's it go to his head in some kind of psychological revenge when he realizes he can now push others around and be the bully like figure everyone despises instead of the other way around.

Overall, yeah, calling Utena an anime about LGBT is pretty dumb, because it really isn't about that for the most part. Most of the gay seeming stuff is there for aesthetics. It's more about postmodern symbolism driven themes like revolution/etc. and deconstructing the shoujo genre and traditional story tropes. Today, I find stuff that tries to "deconstruct" things extremey annoying, I even hated Cabin in the Woods, but Utena did this way before it was popular so it was at least an original idea when it came out and it's at least done in a way that is art-forward as opposed to the "look I know what deconstruction is" school of crap hipster film making.

He's a jerk, all I'm saying is that he at the very least, gave the semblance of being fair.
If you think that makes him worse than the new group, fair enough.

None of them want to understand that that the anime they loved so much was very niche and in no way properly represented the medium as a whole.

And for that new group, it wasn't even what they thought it was!

Neither group wants to admit the cool edgy thing that they thought was anime as a whole, isn't. So it just eats them up and makes them bitter biddies that they are.

That's probably why whenever I hear of genderspecials talking about Utena, I'm assuming they're talking about the movie because the TV show has much more "problematic" content (that the movie only tackles maybe one or two of) that they always bitch about, and there was no way they could've watched 39 episodes of that without melting. Then again, most of these genderspecials are also (ex?)fujoshis and the TV show at least has that going for it to make up for the lack of yuri content, but you never hear about that compared to the "uwu lezzies".

One of the reasons why 4chan picked up, in combination with the Something Awful stuff that happened that birthed the site, was the way these idiots were managing their anime fan community. There isn't a coincidence here that 4chan took the banner of moe and made cute girl reaction images the center piece for weebs on the internet that lasts to even this day. That was a rebellion against the elitist snobs in the old guard, and it course ended up encompassing the whole fandom and leaving ANN in the past.

For starters, I didn't even know about the ip thing, that is really scummy.
Like, I said, I knew Zac was a jerk, and that he was snide condescending prick, hence why I mentioned that pod cast, but that ip thing is just rotten.

I mostly used the site well, for news.
And I just lurked on the forums, I never participated in any of the discussions.
Zac would leave people alone if they disagreed politely with him, but ANN's first rule is: be polite.
So it doesn't surprise me if he used that rule and banned them at a later date for breaking it in some way or form.

Younger anime fans don't really care for old-school stuff, but just because the fandom's not the same as it was "back in my day" doesn't mean you can't continue to enjoy anime your own way. Behavior goes a long way, and they chose to be bitter about it and take it out on the current fandom instead of attempting to become more like historians to preserve the past for those who wish to seek it out.

Guess there may be a direct correlation between anime/narcissism and delayed social skills or development, or something after all.

In the interview, you can clearly tell the thing that chaffed them was Vic having his Sunday panels. Also, the intro for podcast episode has The Flintstone's intro line of "Have a gay, old time!" as a snub at Vic because "Christian Man Hates Gays" logic from the staff. So, ANN's staff have had a hate boner for Mignogna for a while.

Let's be honest, these people probably weren't just unpopular in high school they also had little to no friends to share their interests with because of how niche it was. After finally finding communities that liked the same stuff they did, they quickly found out that the specific titles they liked was considered niche even among them.

As a result they basically became bitter loners who can't relate to other people rarely if at all. This is probably why they instinctively didn't like Vic aside from his personal beliefs. Vic is a man who legitimately shows empathy and kindness to people which fans who have emailed him personally can attest. But these people are so bitter that they can't stop being bitter, even when someone is showing them actual empathy, they reject it automatically.

They didn't grow up in Asia where the kids who grew up watching old anime were not watching Akira and art-house stuff on TV but were watching anime for kids and otaku that did not take itself as seriously. The idea that old anime was vastly different in tone apart from maybe certain genres of OVAs is an incredible myth created by these outsiders who are talking out of their ass for the most part.





The mindset of the bitter old farts who started ANN was molded by an over-reaction to the George W. Bush re-election campaign the left had at the time where certain people were brain washed by the idea that evangelicals and Christians in general are all evil people who want to murder the gays.

It's all over the mindset of people like Justin, Zac, etc. They have no understanding of what Christianity is actually about or what people like Vic actually believe in regards to what he views as his relationship with Christ. I have to give it to Vic. He is definitely a good Christian role-model for putting up with these kinds of idiots' nonstop assaults on him without giving it back in kind on the same level. Maybe not the best idea in regards to strategy, but he's definitely a very good person.
