11/13 Paris Terror Attacks

At least 18 are dead after a series of explosions and shootings. There have been at least 4 separate, but coordinated incidents.

CNN live stream:

CNN also just announced that there are also 60 hostages being held in a theater.

Update: More than 128 dead. We got a new rating. Basically, everything went fucky.

These murderers disgust me. I really have no idea what they think they accomplished here.

That being said, it's probably not ISIS specifically, though all these terrorists groups fall into the same scum of the earth category for me. 8 suspects are now dead according to LA times, and I'm not broken up about it at all.

And the worst part is that there really is no good outcome in the end.

What? Of course it's ISIS, the fact that it's a coordinated attack on multiple front at the same time (apparently multiple suicide bombers amongst them) kinda prove.

Heck, Charlie Hebdo was also ISIS, the dude who did the kasher and those who did the CH attack were supposed to meet up afterwards and were directed by the same guy.

ISIS is not the only terrorist group, though arguably they sport the worst ideology. Many suspect Al Qeuda or a similar group.

Think al-Qaeda or even Boko Haram. Boko Harman is definitely a stretch but at this stage you can't absolutely rule it out. And while ISIS has drowned out al-Quaeda in the news of late, those old monsters are unfortunately still at it.

Well except that apparently one of the guy in Bataclan shouted "for Syria!", and the fact that Hollande had announced the deployment of Charles de Gaulle 2 days priors to the attack.

I mean sure it could be one of the old guys but in comparisons after 9/11 Al qaeda was pretty ineffective for an entire decade. They are far less organized and tech advanced than ISIS is right now, who uses social media and propaganda to a frightening degree, and this attack was carefully planned and prepared via various phones (just like the CH attacks). Heck even Al Qaeda hates ISIS.

I mean, we'll just have to wait a few hours anyway, but it's kinda like dodging the elephant in the room. Elephant who probably also blew that Russian plane.

Really? I turned off the television news a couple hours ago, but at that stage the only thing being reported was one of the nutjobs howling, 'Allah akubra' before he started shooting people. There were no reports of Syria being mentioned. I need to turn the tellie back on.

Dunno if you'll see it since I'm mostly following the french news who interviewed a Bataclan survivor who was retelling how she heard one of them saying "Blame holland for this, this is for what happened in Syria", the aloha snackbar was the bar shooters.

I'm just following ABC 24; it's a national Australian channel. Alas I am monolingual, so I'm pretty limited in my media. But I've turned the television back on now, so there's a good chance it'll be covered soon.

Anyone else find it suspicious this is close to the 1 year anniversary when that nut went into that Lindts cafe in Sydney?

I think it's just a co-incidence. All indications were that the nutjob in question was massively disorganised and technically unaffiliated, although he was absolutely a sympathiser. My understanding is that the man was pretty much operating by himself, and that he was genuinely mentally ill in addition to being a garden variety psychopath.* If it was planned terrorist attack by any organisation, then they buggered it up spectacularly.

*I want to emphasise here that I in no shape, manner or form feel empathy or compassion for this vermin. The man was a rapist and a murderer before he even knew that cafe existed. But yes, he did have a mental illness in addition to being a fuck awful waste of meat.

One of my friends and her husband are spending their first anniversary in Paris right now. I can imagine trying to get home today must be an absolute nightmare.

I don't think there's been as well coordinated a terrorist attack since 9/11, the fact that the city of Paris instilled a curfew for the first time since the German occupation in the second world war speaks volumes about how deep reaching a set of attacks this has been. I went to bed last night after hearing the military had stormed the theatre thinking most people were okay just to wake up to hear most people had died. Simply terrible.

The baffling thing is that the French and the Western world are now going to retaliate even harder than before on Islam. The people who did these attacks surely have to have known doing this would just make things worse than they were before. I just can't see the logic behind it. An eye for an eye makes the whole world go blind.

Probably this is the point. The Islamic State is not stupid, they know that this will result in attacks on moderate Muslims. They probably want that to happen since a larger alienated population will lead to a greater base of support for them

Just saying it's for Syria doesn't mean they are actually legitimate ISIS members. They could just as easily be locals who never set foot in Syria or Iraq, or even a separate terrorist group that sympathizes with ISIS. That's one of the dangers of terrorism.

That's the point. It makes all Muslims look bad. It encourages violations of human rights. It marginalizes Muslims in the West. It encourages more and more people to get radicalized and join ISIS.
