I want to say thank you to the Kiwis who recommended random programs modern search engines won’t let you see because they don’t make bank off of them. I knew there’s probably still free software out there that does the job better than most things shilling for cash, but I sure couldn’t find it. I haven’t been invested in computing these past few years. The internet is such a shithole now, but at least you guys gave me tools to navigate through this tunnel of shit we call our home. :heart-full:

I wish I had literally anything good to throw into the pot, but I don’t really. I think these have already been said but just incase:
-LibreOffice: Classic Microsoft Office clone + literally an OpenOffice clone. OpenOffice has been kind of a pain to get to install lately. LibreOffice is the same shit but more up to date.
-OpenShell: ClassicShell clone but also up to date. The guy that made ClassicShell doesn’t do updates to it anymore. OpenShell picked up where they left off. It brings back the classic Windows taskbar in whatever flavor of your choosing (7, Vista, XP, ect)
-Joplin: Evernote clone but no subscription for syncing your notes to as many devices as you want. It’s also kinda P2P like I think? Where Evernote you had your notes in the cloud, Joplin just syncs your files straight between your devices. At least it seems like it.

Ran into some frustrations on Linux, where I needed my monitor setup to have two behaviors: free mouse movement between any monitor by default and a way to trap the mouse pointer at will for some fullscreen programs per monitor. xpointerbarrier did the job, but don't listen to their Readme example. I don't know why they put those random variables as barrier parameters when 1 1 1 1 for the entire screen is what you normally want.

Hydrus is a desktop booru-styled multimedia manager, and it's as robust as you'd expect. Tags and searches, imports image URLs from the clipboard, has a built-in duplicate filter, etc, and there's a(n extremely large) community run tag database.

Yes, it's almost entirely made for nicking shit from porn sites, but I've used it to collect a surprisingly accurately tagged collection of chan shit. It does take some setting up and some work to tag your own shit if you'd rather not download almost 40gb worth of mappings, but I've been using it for almost four years and it hasn't let me down once. Just remember to cycle your imports tab after every 10,000 or so images, it tends to bog down once it hits five digits.

Would anyone happen to have a file duplicate searcher they'd recommend? I remember CCleaner had one, but apparently it got backdoored out the ass, and I'd rather not keep it.

Going to throw an endorsement behind voidtools "everything" local search engine. It fucking works like black magic for finding things the useless widows search can't.

It's free, it's fast, and it works. Just try it. I had been rolling my eyes at the thought of getting a separate search program for my computer too. However, you don't understand just how shit Windows search is until you have something really good to compare it to on the same platform.

Everything was mentioned in the post above but it has a filter(in advanced search iirc) to only show duplicates(going by filesize, name or both). It can do so across all your drives or you can specify one drive only, or one folder only, or only one kind of file(.webp) or a type of file(images) in one folder/drive/everywhere. It will probably be a pain in the ass if you're dealing with a huge amount of dupes, but hey, it's free and it works. And like the poster above said, you don't have to wait for a long scan, it immediately shows you the results.

There's also AnyTXT for more in depth searches. Free tool that can search within text documents, including HTML.

Anyone know of a reliable way to block garbage recommendations on Youtube? Video blocker is pretty much not updated anymore, and manually attempting to clean up with ublock filters is unreliable.

I can't stand Word, as the moment you move one image your entire document becomes a M.C. Escher piece. Not too fond of the LibreOffice writer either. So instead I use LaTeX.

I'll have one terminal open editing the .tex file, another terminal for converting the .tex file into pdf via pdflatex example.tex, and Evince displaying the pdf. Each save, and transformation to pdf, automatically updates the Evince view. The end result are professional looking documents which are easy to edit without becoming a mess.

All of the internal documentation I make for my team is written in LaTeX, and I've become so comfortable with it that I use it for pretty much anything I need to write.

From what I could gather, there's no real issue other then political/social issues with the .io TLD.
I know fuck-all about bongland politics, which the drama centers around, so I can't speak for certain, but I don't see there to be any need to replace the .io entirely as long as its still maintained.
Listing it as an alternate site in the OP would be good if not just to provide a second option.

They're shutting down literally all their existing services (except the website itself) to focus on whatever "social issue" garbage they're delving into, which is guaranteed to be woketard shit because of their open (and enthusiastic) affiliation with a subreddit. On reddit. Which is not generally known for its tolerance of "people who get shit done" or "people who are not woke."

Existing information on the site may still be valuable, but going forward expect nothing reliable to issue from this group of misfits.

Note, LaTeX is literally 38 years old. Stuff released last year is absolute garbage compared to it.
