That’s interesting cuz I love the Odyssey video. Some of my favorite videos are his console review vids where he breezes through the games and focuses on the console itself.
As for eras, I personally think the worst era of AVGN is the 2012-2014 period where he was making the movie and we were getting videos like Desert Bus and Hong Kong 97.
If it wasn't for whatever the hell that nerd clone or whatever was, I'd love it too. And yeah, that era I remember just being so meh. It was also super weird how he pretty much glanced over a possible literal dead person in Hong Kong '97.

Also a lot of you think the Nintendo World Championship is the worst of the golden era, but I'm gonna have to say it's the Odyssey video. Pat is a charisma vaccum so that video was always going to be meh with him, but the Odyssey video had potential. The main drawback is the "guest", it's so stupid and childish even by his standards. If it wasn't for that it'd be great.

Idk, at least the nerdy turd was "lol so random" like 6 years before that was a thing, on the other hand, Pat is extremely obnoxious, he over sells every line of dialogue he has, he has to constantly suck himself off for his videogame collection and overall that episode looked like Pat wrote it all by himself.

Also that award ceremony skit was just awful, it's almost like new AVGN meets good AVGN.

It’s a pretty soy answer but I really liked his Earthbound episode. He didn’t suck it off but he also wasn’t an ass about it. It felt more like James talking then the Nerd, and that was something I kinda enjoyed. He had the same experience as me being like, “I kinda feel like shit for not playing this earlier, but saying it’s the creme de le creme is exaggerative, and had it’s issues.”

I mean, of course I like the nerd, but there’s a kind of rare magic when he like. Genuinely enjoys something despite it‘s flaws, where the nerd and James become one guy, almost like a balance is struck and suddenly I get this perfect vision of what I want out of his content in the future. He also hits this when he sees something negative but with a lot of potential. That one’s more rare but that same kind of energy occurs.

He’s analytical but still hitting the humorous stuff, he’s not an overbearing skit pusher but still dabbles in something pretty distinctly him. Having that I feel not only please the audience, but please him too. Directors, aspiring ones to be, want to have their own flare to their content wether they enjoy creating it or not, and I feel like he’s balance expression without the cost of the content itself.

What that James flare is I can’t really verbalize, I’ve never been a guy that’s good with words, but we all know what it is, right?

TL;DR- I’m happy James is chasing what he enjoys with the style we know him for with the effort, and creative energy he wants to have. I think this will be best for everyone and looking back on the videos I enjoy, that’s my hope for how this will turn out.
That’s not a soy answer, his Earthbound video is great. Though one of his complaints was completely wrong; he says talking to a doctor doesn’t restore PSI, three seconds after showing footage of a doctor restoring his PSI. Given that he also showed Jeff being revived, I think he looked at that specific part of the footage and genuinely forgot that Jeff doesn’t have PSI.

One of my favorite AVGN moments is the beginning of the Zelda 2 video where he talks about having to play a lot of bad games, then stops himself when he realizes the video is about Zelda 2. “Really? That’s a bad game?… I thought it was pretty good!” Then he goes over his personal experience with Zelda, the historical context surrounding Zelda 2, and why people are conflicted about it. He’s playing up the Nerd character and exaggerating the things he doesn’t like, but you can also tell he sincerely enjoys the game. Also, the glitch gremlin was one of my favorite recurring characters.

On the one hand I liked the ceremony of James just putting the games on his shelf and starring passionately at them, very in tune with him and something he'd probably actually do. On the other hand I'm all for shitting on Pat, so I don't mind it being considered the worst by most here.

I liked the Nintendo World Championships episode when it was new, because it finally demystified that damn thing. Every other source online talking about it was really scattershot with their facts, and I don't even remember seeing a good picture of either version.

It was really funny how the gold version was worth as much as a nice car even before retro games exploded in popularity, but the label was literally just a paper sticker that looked to be printed from an inkjet office printer at the time, like someone at Nintendo's offices just scrambled to print out labels right before they shipped out the carts.

A mediocre "review", but at least there weren't any slobs in it and he talked about something he still has a modicum of passion about. Still not enough to satiate the Truthers' hateboner though. If anything, they hate him more now for reviewing Afterlife, but not muh Girlbusters. Speaking of which, I wonder if James is still relevant enough to generate butthurt over this with the Channel Awesome alumni like Lindsay.
He looks like Mike Sorayama from Venture Bros.

It was also super weird how he pretty much glanced over a possible literal dead person in Hong Kong '97.
In his defense, what more was he supposed to do? Spend twenty minutes ranting about it while repeating the same thing over and over? He pointed it out, made sure people understood how fucked up it was if true and moved on with the rest of the game.

Do you think Bames will ever make that harrer movie he envisioned about the muh dragon in the park ride? I think definitely not, seeing as how it took him months to film a 20 minute """movie""" about a disembodied doll head. The dragon movie would need too much prop work (and time) if he wants it to be more than a green screen cringefest.

If he's smart and benefit of the doubt that he's smart enough to recognize the problems with his channel and is seemingly taking back control while keeping the -much despised- Screenwave crew strictly behind the camera. But if he is smart, he will do a low budget more grounded horror film. Maybe more of a psychological kind of thing or slasher or something. Something you could easily make for $10-50K. He should stay away from Indiegogo and Kickstarter. That way he's not obligated to deliver on rewards or answer to fans and can take his time with the project. Get financing the traditional way or spend a little chunk of the savings. He already has all of the equipment necessary to film and that's a big part of the process and can often be the most expensive aspect.

is hack the movies part of the screenwave umbrella?

but :story: if that fat gengar fucker thought they needed less of tony but more of gengar fucker...none of those fucks have charisma.
Slobwave is like a vortex of charisma. They're practically the least watchable people on the planet.
