Chrono Trigger/Cross

I prefer the DS version -- Frog actually has more of a personality and character development. In the SNES version he's a generic chivalrous knight from the moment you meet him, whereas his actual character (that gets better preserved in the DS translation) starts out as kinda a dick with a chip on his shoulder that warms up to the party over the course of the story. There's also no oddities like a NPC telling you Janus was adopted.

Anytime someone is like "that's not how it was in the Japanese version" I want to tell them to shut the fuck up. Part of the translation process is changing shit to work better for the audience.

That's why you have goofy as fuck "Aerith" and every Metal Gear Solid game after the first one has shit dialogue.
The only time I would bring it up if the translation makes something actively bad.

Like with metroid other M that already had bad dialog but the adaption made it even more stilted.

Which is kinda why the optional sidequest to Cyrus' grave makes more sense in the DS version. We actually get the growth that leads to Frog overcoming his regrets that unlocks the full power of the Masamune. Also I don't think it's bad to give things a little more polish and remove the dumb censorship stuff like Crono and friends passing out after too much soup instead of getting hammered with skull smash (and the minor inconsistencies it caused like Ayla complaining about a stomach ache as she holds her forehead).

Crono and friends getting hammered with skull smash
Remember when Frog woke up in Ayla's hut and she thought he was breakfast?

Oh yeah, another reason why Chrono Trigger is based: you get to kick a troon's ass

though I don't know why they made the one that's named after the guy from Red Hot Chili Peppers the troon

In the Japanese version, all three of Magus's minions are named after food condiments instead. Vinegar, Soy Sauce, and Mayonaise. A reference to that continues in Cross with ones named after Salt, Pepper, and in an optional battle, Ketchup, though the translation slightly tweaked all three so their names weren't just the names of condiments.

I'd rather have Radical Dreamers as a stand alone release. I'm not playing Chrono Cross again. Fuck that game. Fuck Chronopolis. Reptite ending from Chrono Trigger should be canon.
In Chrono Cross it is Canon.
Mediocrity's brutal destruction of art. That's what Cross represents.

Home World Fargo is a pimp, though.
The thing is, Nothing about Cross is Mediocre. I think it's a work that's made with a lot of spite. Love it or Hate it, it's well accomplished in all fronts.
Cross wishes it had Suikoden II's character moments. Aeris' death didn't hit me as hard as some of the moments in that game.
I did Suikoden I and loved it. I haven't had enough patience to do Suikoden II yet though. The autistic energy you need to recruit 108 dudes wore me off with the first game. But I need to do Suiko II to experience a good old JRPG from the best days of gaming. Maybe after I finished Shadow Hearts which I'm playing now.
I loved a lot of the core cast of CC and their subplots - the Karsh, Riddle, and Dario one being my favorite; the Fargo and Nikki one is another good one - but the main plot about Schala, the Time Devourer, Chronopolis, the Dead Sea, and all that tends to be overly complicated to an autistic degree, though trying to piece it together when I was younger was fun.

Also, I always really hated that the only way to get Glenn is to give up on Kid. Having that be the big decision that splits the game into two routes is pretty retarded. The game berates you for giving up on her, makes you have to re-confirm the decision as if you're making a bad one, and there's really no indication that it's going to be as big a deal as it is.
Those are all the best things about Cross. Fuck Kid. And without the autistic Dimensional Time plot stuff, Cross wouldn't be the same.
The other character who comes to mind is Chu-chu from Xenogears.
I'm having PTSD.

Fuck this stuffed toy, Xenogears pisses me off as much as FF9.

I have to replay Trigger too. Such a great game.

Suiko 1 is great and I love the art style. Suiko 2 is more character-focused than 1 and I think tells a better overall story. There's a few quality of life improvements between games, but it's been so long I can't quite remember them all.

I should probably just make a Suikoden + Eiyuden thread.

I keep meaning to play 2. I think my overall impression has been colored by 3: slow, slovenly gameplay, characters with no life or whimsy, and a story which takes forever to go someplace. (Also had a bit of a rocky development, apparently.)

Seems like it's one of those games. Front Mission 3, Xenosaga, Persona 5. Not everyone can handle a 15-hour intro.

I have a lot of love for every game in the series that doesn't have IV in the title, but I agree. Suikoden 3 has a slow, boring plot that takes its sweet time getting anywhere. I haven't dived too deep into its development, but it says a lot that the writers quit after it. We got nothing but prequels and some weird alternate universe thing after.

3s battle system tried something new, and I don't think it worked very well. It's too bad because it concludes some plotlines that have been happening since 1.

Oh ho ho, check out Suikoden V some time. The initial world building gets intense.
The inciting incident doesn't happen for about 8 hours minimum.
