Chrono Trigger/Cross

The Koopalings are named after rock stars, aren't they? The exception is Morton, named for a shouty talk show host.

I like Masato Kato as a writer. All the games he's worked on have had stories I like: CT, CC, Xenogears, FF7, Baten Kaitos, Sands of Destruction.

In a sane world we would have had a proper Chrono 2 & 3.

Our answer doesn't matter. Just like in real life.

Xenogears doesn't do it for me. Last time I played it, it sort of dropped off. (The Nortune sequence is pretty interesting)

There are rumors that the game wasn't hitting its deadlines and Square was prepared to end it after Solaris.

The Evangelion comparison is apt: it has a low-budget ending. The symbolism is comical. There are so many cosmic revelations that it basically ceases to matter. Then an 'uplifting' and cheesy ending comes out of nowhere.

Yeah, Xenogears is something that could've been a lot better if not for poor management or executive meddling or whatever happened with it.

The buck stops with Takahashi. Every game he's worked on has the same problem.

Xenosaga was originally going to be six discs long, but was cut down due to poor sales.

Square has always had a problem with games not meeting deadlines/running out of money/both. Xenogears, Chrono Trigger, quite a few of the FF games...

Assuming it's an actual reason and not just some excuse.

You forgot Larry. He's not named after anyone, they just thought the name fit.

Eight if I remember correctly.

Fun anecdote: I first heard about Xenogears from GameFAQs, and got the impression it was gay as hell, because of the fedora atheists on there at the time busting nuts about how you kill God or whatever. It completely drove me away from checking it out.

If there's one website that'll make you hate RPGs before you even start them, it's GameFAQs

Xenogears' use of philosophy, psychology, and religion definitely attracted the proto-reddit fedora tipping crowd. It's probably why I liked it back when I was younger... then I replayed it and realized stuff like its use of id, ego, and super ego had little to do with the actual concepts, amongst other things.

Now I mostly like it because it's a fun mecha JRPG (well, the first disc at least).

Playing the game is like reading Dune. You'll spend long stretches of the game doing nothing, except pressing X.

Margie was originally going to be a main party member which is why she never stops talking.

Xenogears was first pitched as Final Fantasy 7 and shot down. From there it was retooled into a sequel to Chrono Trigger, but that was scrapped. The fact that Lucca is in Lahan is believed to be a carry-over from that phase of development. There are other common factors: Lavos and Deus, Zeal and Solaris, the Mammon Machine and the Zohar Modifier.

If you want more evidence, there are some unused lines that eventually made it into Chrono Cross. Looking at the script files in Mountain Path:
"Now, Fei, allow me to spill the blood out of love... Like the sea of hell, crimson, deep...!"
This very Kato-style phrase is found not in Xenogears, but Fort Dragonia:
"Let love bleed. Darker and deeper than the seas of Hell!"

Only disc two really bothered me with the amount of text, where it becomes almost a visual novel for the first few hours of it. Disc one I was fine with -- it has more text than usual for a JRPG but it still has a lot of dungeons, explorable towns with secrets, battles, and side quests.
