I hate to say anything that could remotely be interpreted as defending Putin, but is it possible (or even likely) that Russia in general and Putin specifically don't WANT the Ukraine, they just don't want a NATO enemy literally on their border?

Putin is smart enough to be hard to read and on top of that expert at that Russian thing of never just directly saying what your motives are, but seriously, if he wants something like "don't join NATO and plus we get to keep using the deep water ports in your country," what's the big deal?

I still don't quite get it either. I still can't see the Ruskies pretty much permanently occupy large swathes of a potentially hostile/resistant Ukraine.

In this case its actually true, this thread is full of people who have no idea how dirty the conflict got in 2014-2015 after the coup. The Azov Batallion, actual Neo-Nazis, went from village to village just burning down houses and liquidating people in the separatist regions. The Azovites have essentially been incorporated into the Ukranian military since then as well. For the first time since the 1940s a government does need to be de-nazified.

I'm not denying it is happening or that it is not a major motivator for the Russians (some guy posted an older Azov video of them literally crucifying a guy). But let's be real here, this would not be happening if the West had given a guarantee to not letting Ukraine into NATO.

And, surprise. surprise, apparently they found a "Right Sector" (Ukrainian Far-Right group) hideout right under the Ukrainian positions in a literal basement. Apparently, the right sector guys just left their flags, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. -esque patches and literal membership cards lying around in there.

It's a bit of both. Putin doesn't want NATO on his borders (we'll ignore the fact that what a sovereign state does of its own free will is nothing to do with Russia) and he is still seething about the fall of the USSR. As far as he is concerned Ukraine is Soviet clay and always has been.

His true hate, like all subhuman Russian steppe niggers, is reserved for the Poles but they are in NATO so I doubt he'll try it.

3, probably. I'm trying to be as objective as possible and look at this from a purely geopolitical and military point of view, trying to understand each party's actions from their own point of view. But I definitely prefer if this conflict ended quickly and as a minor loss for Ukraine, because total defeat is going to be fucking awful for everyone involved and is going to fuck that region up for the foreseeable future.

As someone who followed the Syrian Civil War much like we're doing this now, this is horseshit. The Russian air force didn't deliberately target hospitals, especially not 'instead of attacking the rebel forces'. They attacked military forces, many of which hid in cities and, as we can see now, it's sadly not uncommon for collateral damage to occur even when you're actively trying to avoid it. The Ivans weren't quite as cautious back in Syria, but it's preposterous to say that they were going out of their way to kill civilians. Putin didn't invest hundreds of millions of USD into that conflict for shits and giggles.

Zelenskiy should make up his kike mind, either fight to the death or go to the negotiating table.

What if saying you're prepared to fight to the death is a way to make the other party go to the negotiating table?
