He kind of did want to exterminate slavs, not all of them but a lot of them. Entire war was about creating a living space for the Germans in the east. Hitler believed that it was economically necessary for in order it to survive. He believed in a theory of shrinking markets in which economic wealth would over time equalize in the world in a manner which wealth would lower for those nations who had wealth and increase to those who had not.

What Hitler wanted was wast farm land in the east, with only few cities in between. These areas would create agricultural products for the Germany while the industrial Germany would ship the industrial good back to it. This germanized east however would have called for removing of the slavs. Someone them would have been slaved, others forcibly genetically germanized, others deported. Considering they would have been deported eastwards and that Germany would have owned most of the fertile soil in Russia, starvation would have been guaranteed, even if no official extermination would have been taken place.

The disregard for the slavs can be seen how the Germans treated their Soviets prisoners compared to Western Allied ones. Slavs were starved and worked to death, while Western Allied prisoners had actually were high chance to see the end of the war.

Come to think of it, if this truly is taking significantly longer than Russia expected for them to conquer Ukraine, I wonder how much of that has to do with them falling for the "they elected a comedian" meme?

If they dismissed him as nothing more than a comedian installed as a US puppet and figured he'd flee the country the moment an actual war began, it'd explain a few things. Russia would probably be doing a lot better if Zelensky had abandoned the country for safety, leaving the leadership to fall into chaos and morale to take a big hit. Instead he's stuck around and put on an appropriate "I'll stand and fight" performance. Keeping moral up and helping diplomatic efforts to get meaningful support because "Hey, the president's still in charge of the country and refusing offers to run for his life, so things can't be that bad for them."

It'd help explain why they seemed to have so little propaganda ready to go against him, and why they don't seem to have been quite ready for central control to hold together this long.

Yeah, as you say, in that scenario Russia would still be fucked. I'd say the US wants to push back against China, while China's pretty happy to maintain the status quo they've established for themselves. So even if the US felt the need and managed to push things to the point where there was a China bloc and an Amercian bloc, Russia wouldn't have the influence needed to be its own bloc. Either one would be willing to accept it as a subordinate, but not as an equal. If it wants to build it's own power and influence back, it needed to build itself up economically. But Putin's taking the military approach, which not many will be eager to sign on board for.

Likely more than that. Been four days now. Soviet/Russian practice is to keep units fighting for 3-4 days until they wear out, then are replaced with other units. This could be also a time of unit rotations. However, doubt the Russians have that many units to be able to keep rotating fresh units in at will.
