That seems to be the great irony of M855: despite being adopted for the purpose of fighting armor, the loss of muzzle velocity from moving from a 55 to 62-grain bullet actually makes it worse. Both rounds are still in inventory, along with the lead-free M855A1 and all the specialty rounds, and damned if Private Joe is going to tell the difference.
