Obviously, it is not a big red button, but Putin has engaged in Khrushchevite nuclear brinksmanship. Putin represents a large counterintelligence apparatus that is equally (or even more) paranoid than he is. The International Brigades who went to Spain solved this by forming units of 2 languages. The redditors will probably be better off since they have English as a franca-lingua.
The overwhelming majority of servicemen do maintenance, logistics, bureaucracy and provide services. This was even the case during ww2.
Most of the redditors are flexing about being good at killing stuff and I have not seen anybody say something like "I'm really good at supply chains/I can fix shit" so I doubt we have many actual vets going.

All of the absolute horrors of WWI and WWII are buried under the 6 gorillion. Unless you specifically study history, you'll never be told about the true nature of trench warfare, you'll never be shown just how incongruent the battles were, you'll always be told that the Allies found a way. In reality, Western Europe was getting curbstomped by the Third Reich for a little while, and you aren't told very much about how that played out for the citizens of those countries. It's usually "Hitler came in and then the country was socialist". War and conflict is so over-simplified and romanticized that the masses fail to see the realities and atrocities behind the narratives. War is obviously a political event, but view it without a political lens and it's just people killing people. There's nothing glorious about it. Jordynn from Oregon killing Boris from Russia isn't going to win hearts and minds. You're just a murderer for hire.

It's pretty amazing that the greatest weapon in human history is basically useless because of all the other issues it's use would cause. The idea that "mutual destruction" exists is pretty silly since there isn't even a need to retaliate to a nuke with another nuke. Aside from maybe with Russia, since they're the only country that would be crazy enough to nuke themselves to stop invaders.
