You know, I was present for the entire Taliban retaking Afghanistan thread last year AND the Israel/Palestine flare-up last year too, and neither of those threads got as testy and, well, hateful as this one. What is different? For this war, I know us typical AnNers are neutral -- maybe SLIGHTLY Russia-leaning (mostly because we're extremely anti-clown world) but the general hate and other users coming in here baiting is intense. I just like to shitpost and make dark jokes while looking at (sorta) news updates during major happenings but here? It's starting to get less fun (which I hate admitting, because I love this thread -- orders of magnitude better than MSM or other websites in terms of discussion, even in it's current state).

Maybe this war is more "real" than the Afghanistan debacle and the Israeli flare ups in 2021? Is half the site Ukrainian and feels like they're about to get genocided? Maybe the fog of war has left only room for speculating and we create internet wars here for content? That's gay but given the notable users and mods who've contributed to the flames, I honestly don't know.

Maybe as the fog of war clears and we get real content, things will clear. But man, the energy here is bad and many users I generally like and proudly shitpost with are going off the rails and it makes me sad. I just want to watch and laugh at clown world like we've always done before...

The larger reason why this is taken more seriously is due to the fact we actually have 2 opposing sides in this conflict. Remember in Afghanistan pro Taliban outlets were exclusively broadcasting in Arabic or Pashto. This time the western propaganda machine is dealing with another propaganda machine that is at the same caliber as themselves.

It's testy because there are a lot of euros on this site and this conflict has the potential to upend European security as it's existed for the last 70-something years. Afghanistan, Syria, Israel etc have always been wartorn shitholes and will continue to be wartorn shitholes until the end of time. But when Europe becomes violent, it rarely stays contained, especially when it's been so long since something happened.

Prisoners of war deserve not to be humilated. Ivan from Russia or Vlad from Ukraine are following orders given by their superiors. There's a reason why the rules of war are so gentle towards POWs compared to their commanders:

POWs cannot be prosecuted for taking a direct part in hostilities. Their detention is not a form of punishment, but only aims to prevent further participation in the conflict. They must be released and repatriated without delay after the end of hostilities. The detaining power may prosecute them for possible war crimes, but not for acts of violence that are lawful under IHL.

POWs must be treated humanely in all circumstances. They are protected against any act of violence, as well as against intimidation, insults, and public curiosity.

In non-international armed conflicts, Article 3 common to the 1949 Geneva Conventions and Additional Protocol II provide that persons deprived of liberty for reasons related to the conflict must also be treated humanely in all circumstances. In particular, they are protected against murder, torture, as well as cruel, humiliating or degrading treatment.

It's genuinely an evil thing to do.
