Oddly enough I think Clint tried and failed to be a good dad but not through lack of trying - and then he's just gave up he still cares but he's got other children and a life outside of Josh he's tried and he will try to keep him from harm but he can't make the focus of his life Josh till either he or josh crosses the great final frontier.

Clint cared for Josh far more than most other Cows parents have, he made mistakes but find me a parent who hasnt - Cobes is still stuck in his 13 year old defiant stage with him still being compliant to an extent, So Clint likely sat him down and said "Under my roof you follow my rules" so Josh kept up with that and when he moved out he started drinking and smoking as soon as he could.

He's fell apart since then he's gone from a so/so level of functional person to a Binge drinker and Terminal smoker, he's lost his structure (through his own choice) and started drinking anything and everything with a alcohol percentage and Cigertte buts, rollies, cigs, cigars and pipes.

I'm sorta sorry for Clint He tried, he really did but Cobes stopped developing at a point where he gets defiant and argumentative oddly enough if Chris was Clints Kid he may have stood a chance, but Josh is at a point and will nearly always be at a point where he wants to thing and feel he's special and is resistant to authority - Having a kid like cobes is hell on the best of parents and cobes was the borderline level of functional where you can hope for them to make something out of life or see them try and crash hard... Cobes has wound up in the latter but mostly from his own choices.

Clint was dealt a shitty hand and tried his best. He still seems to try when Cobes goes off the rails but I think he’s kinda even stopping that. Best indicator is the family gatherings where Josh isn’t particularly welcome. Was listening to Snake Bones today rattling on about Josh and the women in his life. It seems Steph was the only 'normal' one, and even then I suspect she is a bit 'slow'.

The rest seem to be bottom-of-the-barrel drug addicts, near homeless, or a combination of the two. His chances of finding a relatively normal chick are gone -- let alone some idealized big titty goth chick who likes bell towers, hot sauce, $60 pizzas, and smoking and drinking copious amounts.

Stylistically Clint seems stuck in the 90s. Pretty much exactly the artistic output I'd expect from a community college prof.

In all fairness Clint raised a boglim that can live unsupervised and hasn't gotten in legal trouble, yet. Big ups for trying, but it is what it is.
