A good specimen to study when trying to anticipate future outbreaks is an existing virus. Poliovirus is already related two known pathogens that cause poliolike symptoms. Enteroviruses (the species of virus that polio belongs to) in general can cause mycarditis as well as hand, foot, and mouth disease. For some reason they're talking about ancient, extinct diseases like polio. Why? Are they trying engineer more powerful versions of those diseases or are they cushioning the blow for the real diseases? That is such an odd list of examples.
