If we follow
@GuntPunt's theory that entertainment and social media are actively trying to shape people into having MovieBob-esque personalities, then he'd reject it because it would hit too close to home.
I think he is/represents something far worse than that.
Think about the NPC-tier citizens in Bradburry's
Fahrenheit 451 who's lives revolve around being mindlessly entertained while not caring or being oblivious to actual, serious issues. That's very Bob-like as well.
I've sperged in the past about Philip K Dick's "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" and how for Dick the "androids" were a metaphor for people who lacked empathy and had extremely self-centered and pathological personalities -
@glib and I had a small exchange on this thread comparing said androids to Bob and other "Consoomer" types that populate social media.
I don't know how much of all this is said writers correctly predicting and warning about the rise of Bob-like personalities in the future, and how much of it is that the modern convergence of social media and mass entertainment has allowed for such personalities to both emerge and have a very loud voice.
