President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

Russians can't even take Donbas so I'm sure they're planning to start WW3, I'm taking it with gallons of seawater as I think Ukrainians want to keep the heat on so the guns, cash and ammo keep coming, yes there was talk on Russian TV about nuking Warsaw but it's just ludicrous what is being claimed here, just thought I'd post it anyway, sorry for not archiving or formatting but site is broken on mobile for me.
The thing is, at this point, we can't consider Putin a rational actor. Its impossible to predict his next moves. At least half the people in this thread are convinced that he's willing to use nukes, the other that he wouldn't dare because he isn't suicidal. Who knows what he'll do when he realizes he can't win as along as the West continues to support Ukraine?

"RF may conduct a full-scale offensive on Poland, the Baltic states & Kazakhstan as part of a global military special operation on demilitarization & denazification. This was stated by Russian MP Savostyanov. It's only the beginning. Russia frankly promises there will be a lot of European blood," the Ukrainian official wrote.

Pravda did publish an article about a week ago saying Poland was full of Nazis and needs denazifying after they're done over in Ukraine.

It looks like Ukraine might try to recapture Kherson. If they succeed then that's just another embarrassing blunder by the Russian military. They can't even stabilize the front line.

>We are gonna take Kiev in two days, Ukraine isn't a real country
>We'll win in two weeks trust the plan Z
>We didn't really care about changing the government
>We don't want to demilitarize Ukraine
>We don't need Odessa
>Steinerenckovich's attack will fix everything
>We don't need Kiev, we just want to protect Donbass

YOU ARE HERE
>Donbass doesn't matter, КРIМ НАШ!1!1!
>Who gives a toss about Crimea, it's a shithole anyway
>You don't understand deep battle, we seeded Rostov in order to bait the Hohols and trap them
>They'll never have Moscow, father winter is on our side
>Moscow Hah, Vladivostok is way better anyway
>Jokes on you, my ass is yet unsodomized

I can't imagine Russia would give up Kherson that easily. Kherson Oblast controls the water flowing into Crimea, right?
Doesn't matter what they want, its what they can accomplish. They are getting pushed back on all fronts. They're armies are a disorganized mess, their logistics non-existent. I doubt the Russians can even mount a counteroffensive at this point.

Which is why nuke is an option.
The thing is that Putin is not the only one who has to decide to use those nukes. He's also not the only one with everything to lose. He might not care about turning Russia to ash, but his generals will. His government will. The oligarchs will. They may be yesmen, but they aren't insane, or suicidal. The minute Putin tries to start throwing nukes around over a stupid war in Ukraine he started, the moment his government or people in his government acting independently, might get the idea that its time for him to go.

Except where they aren't. Russians still seem to be making decent advances in the south and have focused their efforts on slamming off Mariupol who's pocket continues to shrink.

The Russians have spent weeks trying to capture a city of about 400,000 (Mariupol) and have literally leveled it to the ground in the process. They will never achieve any of their goals at this rate, and will tire out their troops doing it. They will also not be able to repeat this with larger cities like Kyiv and Odessa. The Ukrainians are already launching successful counterattacks. Their advances are not "decent" by any definition of the word; they are slow, plodding, and arduous, where they are actually advancing at all, and their supply lines are being put under more strain the further they push into Ukrainian territory.

It's a miracle Mariupol held out as long as it did, considering no-fucks-given attitude from Russians who just decided to flatten the whole thing, all the while forces defending the city have no way of resupplying or getting reinforcements.
I would assume part of the Russian plan here is to at least cut Ukraine from Black Sea access, but for that they would also have to take Odessa.

Mariupol siege gave time for Odessa to prepare.

I feel a lot of people are going a bit too hard on Russia willing to Nuke.
Russia has a strict nuclear policy which outlines no first-use unless the state is facing an existential risk.

It’s also important to keep in mind US nuclear policy doesn‘t omit first-strike use whatsoever, any US president has the authority to order nuclear strikes whenever whereas all other nuclear powers (with the exception of the DPRK and Israel) all have no first strike policies.

Also, the OCPW has declared that Russia eliminated it's own militarized chemical stockpile since 2017. So Biden should really shut up about Russia potentially using them.

Russia’s still in the wrong here, and I wouldn’t put it past Putin to use them, but he’s not Kim Jon-Un.
Well, if they said it, that must be true, right?
lol

Exactly that. I hope it doesn't come to that, though.

So is it true that Russians have apparently started giving their soldiers injections to better protect them against nerve agents or something? I saw a mention of it on a pro-Ukrainian account but obviously I'm not gonna take it at face value without at least some visual proof or third-party confirmation. On the other hand, at this point I'd totally buy Russians being retarded enough to bring back World War I tactics for flushing out hostile elements.

Also Kamil Galeev did some analysis on the ethnic breakdown of the Russian soldiers being sent to die in Ukraine and the vast majority of them aren't ethnic Russians so I wonder if Russia is trying to fix their "problem" of minorities out-breeding Russians by simply making them commit suicide via Ukrainian army. They better hope this doesn't lead to widespread uprisings and Russians getting butchered in the street in, I dunno, Tatarstan or something.

Pull back to the East; concentrate on the 2 "independent" regions, state that the military of the Ukraine was crushed and attempt to lock-in your gains on the independent states with a bruising defense is obviously where he will now go. State the denazification of these two regions is complete.

And declare victory. The only problem is, this will not stop the heavy handed sanctions against him or his country. And more is to come and will come.

Even with The Brain Scorcher, the vatnigs won't believe it. This will be short-circuiting their brains, competing with 8 YEARS narrative.

1. Russia won't give up its territory for sake of peace, says Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has again appealed to Russia to negotiate an end to the war, but says Ukraine would not agree to give up any of its territory for the sake of peace.
In his nightly video address to the nation Friday, Zelensky appeared to be responding to Col.-Gen Sergei Rudskoi, deputy chief of the Russian general staff, who said Russian forces would now focus on “the main goal, the liberation of Donbas.”
Russian-backed separatists have controlled part of the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine since 2014, and Russian forces have been battling to seize more of the region from Ukraine, including the besieged city of Mariupol.
Rudskoi’s statement also was a suggestion that Russia may be backing away from trying to take Kyiv and other major cities where its offensive has stalled. Zelensky noted that Russian forces have lost thousands of troops but still haven’t been able to take Kyiv or Kharkiv, the second largest city.
