Star Trek - Space: The Final Frontier

I honestly don't like the idea of taking movies from the 70s and 80s and touching up their CGI. It looks so out of place to me.
I can live with it - especially since in The Motion Picture's case they were replacing shots that were already jarringly bad or just plain missing - so long as you've also got the option of watching the theatrical version. That was my only issue with the Director's Edition of TMP, since there was no option to watch the original, though they've at least since released it on Blu-Ray.

As it happens, after the release of TMP: DE, Shatner asked Paramount if they'd be willing to do the same thing for The Final Frontier, and was told "Fuck off, moron, no-one's going to pay good money to watch that piece of shit you made even if it looks nicer."

I'd rather watch Star Trek 5 for the rest of my life then watch any of the nuTrek.

I know a conservative Catholic who's a fan of Trek and even he's told me the only new thing he can stand is lower decks.

I may have Bender steal me a season of it.
Lower Decks is watered down diet Star Trek in animated form shorted to 20 minutes to make it more digestible.

That being said, one episode of Lower Decks is still more Star Trek than the entirety of Discovery and Picard combined,

I think it honestly did improve the original series episodes. But those were done with a lot of love, and they really helped with some of the more distractingly cheesy FX. As I said, though, those were done with the edict that they had to look like they were done in era.

Final Frontier at least had some great character moments. I can't even think about McCoy seeing his dying father, then turning to Sybok and saying "My God man, don't DO this to me!" without shaking.
Deforest Kelley has been a very underrated actor IMO. Sometimes, I'd wonder what TOS would have been like if he was Captain and Kirk was First Officer/Security Officer. The show would have been more believable (Ship Captains are usually older men), but less entertaining since Kirk would have been second.

Kirk needed to be the balance between the emotionless Spock and the outspoken McCoy.

It's a shame too, because out of the six, that one needs a Special Edition the most. The effects are godawful... they literally look like Playstation 2 graphics. I'd also like to see as many of the dumb jokes removed as possible. IIRC, Paramount demanded the script be jokey because the humorous Voyage Home had been so successful.

I honestly thought that was part of its charm. Of all the movies it was most like an original episode, focusing heavily on the main three.

I am an unironic fan of V. Not perfect by any stretch but it's a great tonic to demonstrate that even at its "worst", old Trek was still leagues ahead of Nu-Trek.

Yes. However, Shatner's ego.
I think you need to stop listening to that faggot George Takai. Nobody was watching Trek to see that Nip. They were watching to see Kirk smash pussy, deliver his patented two handed interlocking punch and pal around with his two buds.

Takei's own ego aside, it is true that young Shatner was a line thief, scene stealer, and egomaniac. The man insisted he got to direct because Nimoy got to.

Voyage Home was charmingly funny.

Final Frontier was "bad sitcom" funny.
