This is from the movie "Go and See." "Go and See" is an excellent film about the horrors of the Nazi occupation, where a Belarusian boy who witnesses the horrors of Nazi punitive action turns from a cheerful teenager into a gray-haired old man within two days.


If we talk about cinema as an art form, then this is definitely one of them. Damn, they killed a live cow for realism and got a real shock from the actors.

And yes, war does produce such metamorphoses. Here is a real Soviet soldier, Kobytev, before and after the war. One can only guess what kind of hell he went through.

Would your analysis be different if you put your assumption that the sole Russian goal was the capture of Kiev and Zelenskyyyyy to one side and looked at it on the basis that that was a nice to have/worth a punt goal and the Russian strategy had the destruction of the Ukrainian donbas army in the field as an enabler to greater goals as its primary/simultaneous objective?

In view of what Putin has said about Zelensky and the thrust toward Kyiv must believe it was the primary objective, with the other thrusts intended to tie up the Ukrainians defending major cities and the Donbas, unable to send forces to assist Kyiv. In the absence of such rhetoric, then other strategies would be understandable.

This analysis is what's weird to me. You know his primary goals for this invasion are the Donbaus Republics to be independent or Russian. You know he wants a demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine and you know he doesn't want Ukraine in Nato. Even if Kiev + Zelensky was the primary objective to expedite the rest of his strategic goals you can't think what's happening is a failure because they have secured the Republics, most of the military of Ukraine has been neutralized or is in the East pinned down or is in a city pinned down. Your claim they are failing doesn't make sense with the information available unless you impose your own goals for Russia instead of their stated ones. You make it sound as if a military operation only has one objective at a time. It's like claiming if I tried a scholars mate in a chess game and didn't succeed I've lost the game despite the game not being over and me continuing to be in a winning position. Very confusing. And that's before I mention the Russian military has been saying Zelensky isn't in Kiev or Ukraine since the beginning of the war. Which would make sense since they warned him it was coming but completely goes agaisnt your theory as to why they encircled Kiev in the first place. It couldn't have been for Zelensky, they didn't believe he was there.

there were very few if any American ground forces - they just bombed the shit out of the infrastructure so the serbs couldn't reinforce or move around for shit. most of the 'boots on the ground' were the Croatians and Bosniaks that took advantage of said bombing and which didn't go much further than retaking the shit they previously lost. not that that didn't make the bombing across Serbia any less serious and was the thing that pretty much forced them to give up.

I've postulated it's actually more of a leftist thing, although maybe I need to adjust that to globalist. Basically, the left in the US is observed to not believe in unintended consequences, and believes complex systems must remain static except for changes the left implements. Defund the police? Well, obviously, crime can't go up and the quality of police services can't go down, right? The only change that could occur with that is less money going into the system, nothing else is allowed to change. They also believe only they can make changes (see their unhinged reactions to the Florida anti-grooming law) and that changes can only go in a more-politically-aligned with them direction. (I.e., you can't become LESS progressive.)

With that in mind, and attempting to extrapolate that to a "west instead of leftist" lens... Sanction Russia? Russia literally can't do anything but accept those sanctions and keep pumping that gas on the exact same terms the west demands. Russia is not allowed any agency for themselves, at all, and especially not if they do something the west disagrees with.

A war? Without the GloboHomo Uniparty's approval? Russia can't do that! Only the US, the official military enforcer of GloboHomo, is allowed to bomb people. Doesn't Russia know the borders were declared finalized by GloboHomo decades ago, and thus no changes will ever occur in international borders ever again?
