Unfuckup Our Living Persons Policy and Ban Ryulong
I will be honest. I have a regular account and I have been here for some years but I want to be sure of my anonymity for this. I am, as my account name suggests, *worried*.
When this Wiki started, it was about mocking the extreme, the mystical snake oil sellers. Articles like
Racialism are classic RW. We talked about issues, and when we picked on individuals they were high profile individuals where what we thought was frankly a drop in the ocean.
Pat Robertson has a legion of higher profile critics than us. We remembered we were amateurs not professional journalists or lawyers.
Over the last couple of years though our posts about real world people have started to get out of hand. We make extreme, potentially damaging allegations based on a Tumblr post or a tweet from some random individual. Allegations we could never defend in court or to hostile media.
The recent drama over
Ryulong has been the last straw for me. I came here for fun and to fight the good fight. I did not come here to get sued, or named, or have my employer contacted.
Looking at our article on
GamerGate it is pretty damn clear that there are a lot of bad things to say about the Gators. It is pretty clear some of them are Nazis, some of them have bad histories or whatever. It is also pretty frackin' clear that in places we are making allegations that we cannot possibly defend and our belief we are immune to the law or retaliation by right wing media is a pitiful delusion.
I lurk in wingnut IRC sometimes and that includes some Gator IRC. For whatever reason we are on their radar at the moment. A current op they are planning is to dox as many of the editors here as possible and have people like Ralph at the Ralph Retort and Milo at Breitbart do hitpieces. Earlier they were discussing the real world identity of
Queex - they claim they have his name (I will not post it but initials are BW) and he works for an academic institution. I am not precisely sure what he has done. They were working on a lot of other people too.
I also followed the recent debacle with
Vordrak. He seems to have lost interest now thanks to
CarpetSmoker and he reaching an accommodation. That is a good thing because casual search reveals he has successfully brought and defended litigation against a lot of people and organisations with real lawyers. For example GitHub is a multinational multimillion dollar company.
They threatened him to try to stop him writing an article or picturing their staff. His response was to correct their lawyer as patronisingly as possible and then
use honeymoon photos of said staff. GitHub caved in and pulled their code of conduct. Then there was his dispute with millionairess rockstar Amy Lee. Result? Forum closed. Akismet? Massive company, caved in to Vordrak's legal threats and closed FreeRedditCheck. He really can't be that bad a lawyer.
Whilst Vordrak has gone now we still have Milo, Ralph and their teenage hordes to deal with. The kicker? They have a legit grouse.
We are allowing wild allegations about Milo on the basis of a Tumblr post. We are letting people here write whatever crap they want and kidding ourselves here that we are untouchable. Someone, Queex I think, was saying it would be illegal to name him. Why? Newspapers here in the States and in the UK name people every day. Even store clerks. He is a statistician. To Milo and his ilk Queex is just prey. Does he really think Breitbart can't call his boss or his dean (if the Gators have the right dox)? Do you want Milo tweeting your picture and some garbled story about you 'defending pedophile Sarah Nyberg' to his 100,000 followers?
My point here is that I am using an anonymous account because I do not want my real world identity found and targeted. It is quite obvious that will happen increasingly. I might be willing to show more of a spine if we were in the right or if we were fighting the good fight but we are NOT. We are currently slightly less accurate than the National Inquirer. I signed on for 'snarky' not 'fuckwitted hate group'.

1. Sarah Nyberg admitted she said all the things she said. GamerGate did not take it out of context.
What I want out of this case is for us to tighten up on our standards. I want us to stop poking bears like Milo. I also want Ryulong gone. This place is not a personal army or a platform for an obsessive to hound people.
