The Final Fantasy Thread

Keep on excusing these woke companies, good job. Self-censorship is still censorship.

And nobody actually gives a shit about cartoon tit size, it's the principle of the matter, nobody is jacking to this shit. I don't need Square covering up blocky old PS1 cleavage in FF8, it's fucking insulting and stupid.

I guarantee they'll retroactively change other shit too eventually, like pronoun shit and "offensive jokes". Keep letting them get away with it.
Did you miss the entire bitch fit about the same 'ethix department' that changed Chrono Cross to NOT include a canonically 9 year olds ass? And people lost their shit.

Yes, there is such a thing as caring too much, and you seem to be right there. When they start changing shit that doesn't need changed, I'll react accordingly. I don't just pick an arbitrary side and scream, I react to individual actions.
Nah, you would be totally fucking lost. I had some disappointment with it, but I felt Remind dlc solved my complaints.
In all seriousness, I know you're right, I'm still just pissed off about all of the characterization from 2 onwards being thrown in a fucking bin.
Roxas allows himself to be subsumed into Sora so they can be whole? Nah, he comes back.
Kairi doesn't want to be a McGuffin? Well, she spends the game in the hyperbolic time chamber, before getting kidnapped again anyways. Girl power.
Xaldin is a loyal soldier that seeks a heart? No, he always had some random girl he's been trying to save.
Fucking Xion gets erased from reality!? Nope, we can't have ANYONE, even the literal big bad, have a non-happy ending!

I just want square to show the new vehicles for 7RII because I want to do roadtripping again like in 15 but better. That was the only part of the game I liked, wake up at 5am, find special monsters to kill, take pictures, explore, do it again.

Some people hate that fishing gets included with everything but I don't mind it. I liked all the fishing stuff in series like Kiseki, Tales of Arise, Ys, and others.

I don't give a fuck about the cartoon character's digital panties but I do give a fuck about companies that are so hypersensitive to even the possibility of woke criticism that they treat their own games like some sort of hazardous waste before they deign to release a substandard port.

I just want to game. I just want game companies to focus on making fun games. WHO CARES ABOUT THE REST. But they do and they force us to have these retarded conversations.

A nine year old's under ware being changed has zero effect on how the game actually plays.

All the stuff is still very much surface level, the censorship has to actually wind up going much deeper than visuals or story to have any real effect on a game. For example removing entire units or items with no equal replacement, cutting entire stages which could cause things like a sudden difficulty spike or block you out of being able to use utilities. Stuff like that is how censorship ruins a game because now you're removing mechanics that the game was based on and you're causing an imbalance with no way to fix it.

Take for example the Original Nier. Both of the main characters were different due to demographic reasons. It had zero effect on how the game actually played. Now it wasn't due to any censorship reasons but it's still way more drastic in execution than any of the censorship changes have been, and the game still turned out fine.

Its called principles Moira. Nobody was concerned about how the game plays because they didn't change that (though people are, rightfully, not happy about having a substandard port). People oppose censorship on principle.

That's honestly too broad a scope to just oppose something on principle for me. I've always gone on a case by case basis because circumstances are usually different.

The main thing that matters is the game good or not. I'm not going to buy a bad game just because it has specific principles behind it.

Principals or tribalism? You be the judge.

I oppose censorship in principal, but what that means changes on a case by case basis. Is the original FF7 choosing to have Cid speak in literal censorship bleeps censorship, self-censorship, or a stylistic choice? And more over, does if effect the game? Not just game play, but effect the character?

Is a game hiding a tit to avoid an M rating censorship, or just wisely playing to the market?

While I disagree with Moira on a great many things, I will say he's right here: Game design is far too broad to just apply 'no censorship ever by any definition.' like with something like Comedians.

To wit: Trish farting light motes in DMC5 is stupid, because it wasn't in the original, and was poorly added because of western sensibilities, but 'generic anime game 4434' using light to cover an ass is part of the original game, and thus is drawn in less obviously, despite them both being an instance of the exact same act of 'censorship'.

Who the fuck cares
If you don't care, why bother commenting on it? Clearly, some people do. If you don't, just go on about your business.

If you oppose censorship in principle, then you oppose censorship period, because you oppose the very idea of censorship. If your okay with censorship in some situations, then you really don't oppose censorship in principle, just in situations you care about.

I oppose censorship in principle, and thus I oppose it, in general, in all situations. I'm not going to pick at straws trying to find a way to draw a line I know I can't draw; Its unnecessary at best, actively damaging to a work at worst. Thus, I oppose the concept in all situations.

If those are your feelings, that's your prerogative. I can't tell you to not feel that way. But I don't have to feel that way myself.

For sure. Fishing in games has always been fun for me. I believe the three games in particular that I remember (within the past 2-3 years) where I enjoyed it a lot were Red Dead Redemption 2, Persona 5, and Fire Emblem Three Houses.

Remind does explain how Roxa's comes back and gives Kairi some much needed time to shine. It is very much what the ending DLC for mass effect wanted and failed to be. Fixed dam near every complaint I had.

I think your confusing xaldin for xemnas? or someone else.... im confused. Best guess is your talking about Saïx. It is admitidly a rather out of left field peice of motivation, but I dig the idea that the organization members when they get revived are more human and aware of what they once were. When they were nobody's out of the gate they were rather ignorant, amnesiac and malleable

Xion is a bit of a stretch, but I like the idea the villains are the ones who bring her back, to try and use her as a secret weapon.

I thought this was about Tifa? And I recall myself also referencing FF8, all adult women. If you want to suddenly jump to an extreme example like that instance of "canonical 9 year old ass" censorship in Chrono Cross to better suit your generally untenable position, so be it. For the record, I'm not fully against censorship, but it should be used only as necessary, especially in regard to classics.

On the one hand, Chrono Cross is a game which nobody ever called for to be censored in this way before now. Neither you nor anyone else have ever been bothered by its original content; now you feel it is imperative to defend censorship of something which you, like I, never even payed attention to before. It's a disingenuous concern, and an instance of unnecessary censorship.

On the other hand, while I don't think making concessions to Square will do anything but embolden them to further censor games, it is already done and it is not a significant loss. Though I think it's stupid to randomly cover the two grainy old polygons we call a "butt" after decades of being a non-issue, it's technically a good change which I cautiously condone it.

To me it's not worth fighting for even in principle. If she's depicted as a minor it's better she's covered up, it's one of the few cases where I think censorship is tolerable. Of course, you know Ayla will be in a fucking burqa in the next Chrono Trigger release because once they get a taste of censorship they don't stop.

Yes, there is such a thing as caring too much, and you seem to be right there.
I'm not going to be crying myself to sleep or taking my trenchcoat to S-E H.Q, at most I'll choose not to buy something and complain. Big whoop, idc.

Define "needs to be changed" in the context of decades old classic games which had nary a complaint upon any of their rereleases.

Oh come on; it was shit.

Final Fantasy X = Giant monsters are your friends!

Final Fantasy X-2: Magic dresses! Free your inner Barbie doll! I'm surprised they diidn't change the chocobos into brushable ponies.
Daily reminder that X-2 was what it was because The Spirit Within damn near bankrupted Square and X-2 was created as a literally soulless cash grab with lots of sexual fan service explicitly to make a quick buck.

Started a new FF7 playthrough for the first time in like a decade. Going for all the kahntent cutscenes items sekrits etc never gone for that before

Got a PC and NPC character models mod and it's amazing how much more I'm into it in when the sprites aren't Michelin man looking motherfuckers

But that's what makes Square's actions perplexing to say the least. They had no problem whatsoever letting you check out 2B's rump, but it seems they thought doing the same for Tifa, that is for her default costume in the remake, was a bridge too far. That notion, however, is contradicted later when you see her in one of her other [optional/temporary] costumes in the game which was fan service galore. So what's the point?

As for the ratings-"censorship" argument, I personally don't get it with regards to say FF7R and Nier Automata. I can understand it for Chrono Cross though.

I'm of the Yoko Taro school of thought that every RPG needs a fishing minigame. It is only ever an improvement.
Y’all wanna bet squeenix will make up another excuse for why they can’t show a new trailer for FFXVI? Perhaps they’ll say it’s because of the war in Ukraine this time.
Why would they even bother? The debut trailer actually showed gameplay and some in-game cutscenes and faggots who think Final Fantasy is strictly awkward dialogue, futuristic settings, impossibly beautiful pre-rendered cutscenes and Nomura-belts ripped them apart.

It's so blatant and shitty that I almost respect it more as a result.
So what's the point?
It's about dodging around the media bloodhounds. You have Tifa's default model and outfit slimmed down in the tit department and make a bit of a stink about how you're going to keep the sexualization toned down and all the dangerhairs and troons count it as a win and leave the game alone. They aren't going to actually play it so when you get a few hours in and she's in a kinky outfit later you get to have your cake and eat it too.

That doesn't explain why the "dangerhairs" didn't whine about Nier Automata. Hek, I didn't hear a peep regarding Lady Dimitrescu from RE8. I didn't even hear a peep about that game lacking "diversity" either.

There's no reason these multi-million dollar companies should be bending the knee to these fickle people.
