I might sound retarded, but are reusable cloth hand towels common in restaurants? I've only ever seen paper and those air thingies. Like, imagine if McDonald's had cloth towels. There would be SO MANY gross stories that would make this sound like the pinnacle of hygiene.

It's definitely not common, but this is supposed to be one of those sustainable all-naturalconscious experiences. You clean your hands, dry your clean hands on the towel, and toss it in the bin. Then the linen guys come pick them up throughout the week and deliver clean ones. Not any weirder IMO than restaurants using cloth for service or cleaning (which is common), but reusable toilet paper in any food establishment, no matter how crunchy, seems like an obvious 'no.' To most of us, at least.

So it sounds like Alice grabbed a towel off the sink, carried it with her to the toilet, then brought the dirty towel back out and threw it in the bin, which is open to the rest of the dining area.

In some businesses they are. For example, almost every hair salon, spa, and SOME massage/physio clinics and yoga studio I’ve been to use them. It’s common in businesses that have low foot traffic per day (like small salons) that can throw a load of towels in the wash once or twice a day then fold them.

They're becoming more common in fancy restaurants as part of the eco trend, but as the others have pointed out, it's usually a basket of nice little folded or rolled hand towels only used for drying your recently-washed hands.
