Seems like throughout the pandemic, if anyone had any potential to be a lolcow, it came out sooner or later. The already slipping quality of AVGN slid downhill faster throughout, and it came to a head with the BTS video and the Cinemassacre Podcast.

Turns out, James isn't much of a cow himself, but he's around a couple of them. He's a luddite, a boomer, somewhat autistic, overly idealistic, but not really a cow. They seemed to actually right the ship since the top of the year, canceling the podcast and putting out good content. It's a shame that they wasted episode 200 on a mix of a bad episode and a clip show, but 201 and 202 were pretty good.

I think James has potential to be a cow. It will be decided by how he chooses to go about with things in the future. I said yesterday in the Dick Masterson thread about how people become cows when they signal what their detractors are doing is actually getting underneath their skin. It can be a simple moment of weakness that signals to trolls that this person is ripe for the picking.

That is essentially what happened with the BTS video: he mildly signaled that he didn't like the growing complaints regarding the decline of his channel. Suddenly everyone saw the vulnerability and pounced on him. Hence why we got more and more backlash against him plus the plagiarism controversy.

Thinks have generally cooled off because James for the most is avoiding adding any more fuel from the fire. I view him as still being in the position where he can fix things and restore his reputation. For a lot of content creators there is a "no turning back" moment where they will be permanently hated by everyone and receive nothing but trolling from then on out. James hasn't reached that point just yet, but it could be coming. If he makes the wrong choices, I have no doubt he will be a full blown cow the likes of DSP or WingsofRedemption.

Definitely looks a lot better 100%. I get people will miss the Mike Matei art thumbnails but still they are definitely a lot better than the ones that purposely follow the algorithm for the sake of it. Apparently these thumbnails are based on Amazon Prime ones but point still stands they are still better.

It's helped tremendously that he has no real social media presence. He posts the AVGN/Cinemassacre shit but you never get his personal opinion on anything and it's more a formality to promote the shit more than anything else.

I personally don't believe he does this to avoid drama but he came from an age before social media so he just doesn't have an interest in it.

I really wish James would slow down production and put out 2-3 great quality AVGN's a year and then work on something he is actually passionate about like indie horror filmmaking. The Earthbound video he did a couple years ago proved to me he is still capable of producing good content when he puts in the effort. I don't think I'm alone here in saying I would rather have 3 high quality well scripted episodes then 12 mediocre ones.

That's because the famed "Episode 200" was low-energy ¡Jeb!.

The Contra episode was closer in form to the days of the "Angry Nintendo Nerd" and the pre-2011 AVGN stuff where his more recent offerings are less about love of creating engaging content and, as as he's admitted, more about meeting the arbitrary deadlines of the people bankrolling him.
