My impression was always:
Yellow: regular Ukrainian army
Blue: Special units: AZOV, Aidar, ...
Green: Some kind of (military) police units

I think we will never really know what happened in there, even after the war ends. This thing has assumed mythical proportions and it’s going to be used as propaganda by both parts for the next decades.

There are small groups of soldiers from Azovstal that surrendered and, from what they say, Nazi larpers decided to larp a little bit as Stalin and enacted order No. 227. Attempts to surrender will be stopped by bullets to the back, and again, the words of prisoners are not really reliable sources, but still something to consider.
