Two of the main purposes of crop subsidies now are to keep the ethanol industry running and ensure we use HFC instead of cane sugar. Federal agricultural policy is a bizarrely complex system of corruption and kickbacks, and always has been. The system is actually a Mexican standoff. Congress has to pass a farm bill every year, or FDR's price & production controls kick back in, and America's entire agricultural sector will be destroyed within a year. They don't repeal the Depression-era law, because the farm bill is so rich with pork & bribes that politicians don't want to stop having to pass it annually. Plus it gives them a great talking point back home, "See, look! I'm the reason we still grow food in this state!" (This is false; American land is extremely fertile, and we'd probably just grow something other than corn if it wasn't for ag subsidies.)

It's not really "welfare;" it's more favoritism, but that's a complicated topic that Bob's diabetes-ruined brain can't handle.

Castro: Kennedy was using back channels including a broad he once nailed to try and make a deal with Castro. Kennedy's death was actually a major blow to Castro because LBJ thought that Commie Oswald might had been a Castro agent.

The Military and Big Business: Kennedy was involved in Vietnam so the angle that they wanted Nam and thought Kennedy would stop them makes no sense.

The Soviets: Khurshchev was the most pro western peace leader the Soviet Union ever had until Gorbachev. The Cuban Missile Crisis was in response to us putting nukes in Turkey. & Brezhnev supported Detente which killing the President wouldn't help. Don't let the lefty teachers fool you the Soviets knew Kennedy was mostly bark than bite it's why they built the Berlin Wall under him.
