Depends on the state, bans on carrying guns in Illinois and Pennsylvania were specifically created the late 60s to address leftist violence during the summer of '68 with the federal regulation of explosives in 1968 being the same.well it's not even a consistient narrative because in practical application gun control is a bunch of shit that basically only impacts poor people (so, black people in many urban areas). gun melting point laws mean that guns made out of zinc alloys are illegal in many states, and while I personally would not trust my life to a $150 matchbox zinc die cast firearm, there are people out there who can't afford anything better. Those piece of shit saturday night specials are half the price of a 'real' gun but they still go bang, and the narrative is that they are only used for crimes. spoilers - the people who can't afford a $300 ruger are most likely the kind of people that these politicians wax poetic about needing to protect.
those laws harken back to when the focus on gun control was on black criminals and not on white people. i mean, dividing people is the whole premise of gun control if you drop the bullshit, but the entire argument on why we need to limit gun ownership is inconsistent because it's a motte and bailey between the indefensible "those people shouldnt have guns" and then some categorical rationalization of that with 'well mine aren't assult weapons' or 'well mine are for sport, not killing' or 'well those people belong to bad tribe'
Yes apparently up until 1968 you could technically buy grenades and rocket launchers over the counter like any other firearms.
Similarly Mexico enacted most of their restrictions in 1971 due to a communist insurrection in the south of Mexico, before that Mexico had more liberal gun laws than Texas at the time.
