The Elder Scrolls

Are most in the assets in that game just cribbed from Skyrim? I've never played it so I didn't realize that before.
Just looking at the armor and weapons alone, there's a lot of weapons that are the same as Skyrim or at least very similar. A lot of the armor seems to be new or slightly changed, there's armor and weapon sets unique to this game and some existing sets have new variants.
I think the character assets all come from Skyrim, the character creation options are the same but narrowed down. NPCs are all pretty much "Skyrim but we need this to run on phones and facial expressions take too much data"

If you haven't, try out Kingdom Come. It has a linear story structure, but the gameplay is basically Elder Scrolls without the magic and better combat
Yeah, you see... It's similar, but not the same! In KC, you play as Henry and role-play as Henry, and in the end just follow Henry's story. Not quite like TES, where you can just fuck around do what you like. Oh, and Henry can't cast fireballs.

I would say that the closest game we have is Kenshi, it has the same feel of open-world sandbox and RPG elements. But still, production quality sets them apart.

I would also say that Mount&Blade is somewhat close to TES, but it lacks a vibrant and immersive world.

Funny enough, the stuff they did make for Blades was sold through the Creation Club for Skyrim and is included in the Anniversary Edition.

So some Blades assets actually got cribbed for Skyrim at the end of the day.

I loved Blades basic armours like leather and iron (or was it still?), they look way better then Skyrim's. Leather is nice and made for a rogue character and not this piece of garbage we have in Skyrim, and iron is a cool rugged knightly set, kinda looks like a Souls armour. So if they actually ported this in Skyrim AE, I wouldn't mind so much. Although I think modders made similar armour sets long time ago.

Got the ps4 version having played the original years ago on 360.

I loved getting multiple followers. For example I have a follower and then I just don't do Serena's quests. So she comes with me.

Is it possible to do this with more than just two? Like say....idk....Lydia, Serena, and a doggo?

I think it should work. I'm pretty sure "pets" are not counted as normal followers, so if you find a stray dog in a random encounter or get Meeko at his cabin they should join up with your follower and quest follower.

You might have some pathing jank with it though.

on Skyrim, and it's objectively a shitty and bugged game, but damn its fun as fuck. No other game gives you this kind of experience, that sense of grand open-world sandbox
This really hits the nail. It is an objectively shit game in many regards, but something about what it does is just fun as fuck. When you can mod out the worst aspects it becomes a fantastic experience.

Elder Scrolls without the magic and better combat.
The combat falls apart whenever you have to engage more than one enemy. I dunno, it's okay when fighting one person but any more than that and at least Skyrim's brainless combat is easy to get through.

A quick update on Daggerfall Unity:
Version 0.13.5 is out. The game is stable and playable. Just minor bug cleanup, localisations, and some new minor features for QoL left. Hopefully, we get to 1.0 this year.

Additionally, a madland named Jwlar has gone and made a few comprehensive mod lists.

I was going to do a big 'ol autistic post when DFU hit 1.0 about mods, this guy beat me to it. Enjoy Daggerfall!

Is it worth going back to older TES games after starting with Skyrim? I feel like I'll be annoyed by QOL issues and even more jank. Is Oblivion objectively fun or only something you can enjoy if you played it at the time?

Give them a go if you have Game Pass, or get them on sale with the DLC. Oblivion is easily manageable as it's a middle ground (and pretty close to Fallout 3 or New Vegas, so if you liked them you should be able to like it), but Morrowind is certainly its own beast. If you go with Morrowind, I recommend the UESP website as it has tons of guides for the quests and locations, as well as a starting out guide for newcomers.

Oblivion is pretty easy to get into coming from skyrim, morrowind is a bit more difficult. The mechanics for morrowind are definitely a product of the early 2000s.

Yeah, I'd say you could get into Oblivion. The level system is super jank so you may need to abuse the difficulty slider unless you read a guide ahead of time.

I couldn't get into Morrowind and I started with Oblivion. Way too numbers based for my liking.

I didn't even do a real playthrough of Morrowind until last year and loved it, but if you have a hard time with jank I'd just recommend Oblivion, especially if you're averse to mods for whatever reason. But if you're not, you'd be good to go with the Unofficial suite of bugfix mods and Realistic Levelling, which replaces the awful system with the one from Skyrim.

If it's on par with FO3 in terms of playability then I'm good with it.

I never messed around with mods before when I used to dabble in PC gaming way back, but I might try it once my Steam Deck arrives if it's easy to do.

Pretty much since they were built on the same engine, although the Fallout games were a bit more refined than Oblivion.

If you do go for Oblivion, definitely get Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles. The former's a decent five hour experience (although you need to be pretty much a goody two shoes to take full advantage of its weapons & armor), and the latter's on the level of Skyrim's Dragonborn and Fallout 4's Far Harbor expansions.

If you only played Skyrim, Obvlivion would be not much of a problem. In terms of Gameplay it is almost the exact game. Only differences are of course graphics, some weird things like the dialogue mini game (which can be completely ignored... and should be ignored lol), etc... I also think Oblivion's main quest kinda sucks, Skyrim's was better (but also kinda sucked). Oblivion had the by far better guilds, tho. I especially liked the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild in Oblivion. But it's been at least a decade since I played it for the last time, so take that with a grain of salt.

Morrowind will be kind of a culture shock for you. It is somewhere between the "Bethesda style games" and classic RPGs. It is still my favorite in the series, and the first TES I ever played.
In short, Morrowind has almost no voiced NPCs apart from a few important for the main story, so you will read a lot - if you even do the main story.
Combat is based on your skills and dice rolls like in a classical RPG, so prepare to be weak af in the beginning with your hits barely doing damage.
It also doesn't take you by the hand like Skyrim. You can easily overlook the main story.
Also no fast travel, you can only fast travel between certain towns by paying for a ride. But the world is actually so nicely designed and rather small that you won't miss it.

But it is still a great game which allows the player some freedoms Oblivion and Skyrim won't allow him.

For the first two games: I only played Daggerfall, which is kind of a broken masterpiece. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who hasn't at least played Morrowind. Avoid that for now. It will give you the most opportunities for role playing of any TES title, but you really need to mod it so that it even works (Daggerfall Unity is kinda mandatory) and previous knowledge in TTRPGs or CRPGs is kinda mandatory to play it too.

I wouldn't say Oblivion is almost exactly the same as Skyrim gameplay-wise. It introduced the concept of your attacks always hitting, but it otherwise has attributes and the level up system from Morrowind.

I have been playing Nehrim, the total converstion mod for Oblivion and I notice some issue.
1. The game crashes all the time. This can be the issue with memory leak as it runs out of control and as Oblivion was not optimized for modern hardware, it is a pain in the ass. Trying to find fixes for it, but so far, no luck, as this mod is not super well known.
2. the UI. I may haven been spolied by more modern hardware, but good god, is the UI for Oblivion clunky as shit.
otherwise, the mod is very impressive. For a mod that came out in 2010, it is very ambious. to say the least.
