Resident Evil 4 Remake - Ashley is now an Instagram Thot

I just replayed the original RE4 last year and was not very impressed, the opening chunk of the game is legendary and there was a initial wave of nostalgia, but overall I think it's easily one of the most overrated games, impressive for 2005, doesn't hold up super well today.

I WANT them to tone down the camp and make it more in line with the tone of REmake, RE always has a little camp, but RE4 took it a bit too far.

I also hope it's significantly expanded and changed up than just the same game with better graphics, the island section definitely needs to be significantly rethought as large chunks of it are a tedious slog.

I think a good way to put it is in REmake (the best game in the series) a single zombie can make you crap your pants, in RE4 the Ganados are just so much cannon fodder as you mow them down by the literal hundreds, it's not what RE should really be about, hopefully they up the horror factor significantly.

Meh. Trailer is ok.

I've heard leaks that A) some bosses have been cut B) Saddler is more scientist than cultist, C) you enter the ganado village at dusk now so its darker, the chainsaw enemy has an actual backstory now, Luis Seras role has been increased, and Ashley goes from being a tag along to trying to do things to help Leon in combat now, such as distracting enemies when you get swarmed.
Sounds awful.

Trailer looks visually impressive, and the familiar locations look really good. Still, the vibes I'm getting off of the trailer makes me believe it's going to be really bland.

I just don't think Capcom has the magic anymore. They had one last trick with RE7, but RE2 remake and RE3 remake were mixed bags, 3 was dogshit, and both games feel so...western

Not really feeling it with how less campy it is, even the plain text logo without the shattered glass “4” just kind of rubs me wrong. Like this will more of a theme park ride rather than something coming from a place of passion.
Also there’s things with the new character designs that just seem so dialed back and not really trying to emulate the original. Leon honestly looks like a fat guy from behind. I saw pics too that Ashley is completely covered now and has a really weird orange jacket so that’s kind of lame too.

I personally don't have high hopes for it. In my opinion RE4 really just needed a graphical update, maybe a new mode or extra weapons to spice things up. Don't fix what isn't broken y'know.
Thankfully we already have a really good graphical update: https://www.re4hd.com/?page_id=9303

So while I'm still a little miffed about the announcement, at least I could still play the OG re4 in updated graphics.

With the removal of the camp will that annoying little shit's right hand no longer come off? So very disappointed if that's the case.

(To me I always viewed Leon being campy as him coping with a stressful situation. All alone in the middle of Spain trying to rescue the President's daughter, and there's this mutant cult of parasite-infested weirdos who keep getting in his way. You too would make bad jokes to blow off some steam.)

The only thing i hope it Will do is being more scary, just copy pasting the original would be a bad idea.
Just replace the things they remove then outright leaving it out, even if getting chased by a Napoleon giant robot Will be missed.

Hopefully this time they either got rid of the Ashley escort missions or made them a lot less annoying.

That said, I'm not terribly excited for this. I can't see them catching lightning twice unlike say RE1 vs RE1 remake.

Going by the trailer it looks like they've removed all the campness from the voice acting and the game's taking itself far too seriously.
I kinda figured they'd go that route, with the way REmake2 and 3 went. Now, I don't have much faith that Capcom will somehow manage to make this game both dark/gritty and campy, but a tiny part of me has hope.

That part of me is also very stupid.

Being able to shoot while moving is really just about it other than graphics and some weapon balances. They got so much right, intentionally or otherwise that attempting to "improve" on it is almost destined to failure.

Skirtgate 2.0?
I think everybody knew that Ashley won't be wearing her original outfit. In this day and age it just wasn't going to fly. I'm also going to guess that we'll see an article or two about how her new outfit is a total "Take That!" to white, racist male gamers and somehow it helps defeat gamergate/misogyny/dudebros, and that her new clothes are more "realistic" and a reflection of a new era of something something empowering women something something donate to my patreon.

Then Capcom will quietly release her original outfit as free DLC or an unlockable when you beat game.

Or...

Edit: Re-watching the trailer it seems she is wearing the skirt, but she's also wearing leggings.

Been trying to forget RE0 since I played it.
What's wrong with it? The villain is cheesy but the more I play 0 the more I like it, I was especially very impressed with it when I played it last year, it's honestly my favorite game in the series after REmake.

It's gonna be real hard to disassociate it from the original but if they decide to make it more like the beta version, especially with all the old outfits they got, then I may be fine with that
It'd be cool if they let Leon keep his bomber jacket through the whole game.

Them going in a different direction is good precisely because Resident Evil 4 doesn't need a remake. If you want campy Leon you can grab the HD Texture pack to spruce things up a bit and go have an awesome time, it still holds up as one of the best games ever made.

On the other hand, that Resident Evil 3.5 prototype does need a remake. If that's the direction they're leaning towards, with more emphasis on horror (in 3.5 the infection was supposed to give you hallucinations during gameplay and stuff) then yeah, I'm all for it.

I'm honestly not exactly sure why exactly RE4 of all games needed to be remade. The original still holds up extremely well, especially given all the ports it has had over the decades, so it's not as though people aren't unfamiliar with it. Whereas RE2 and RE3 are a bit harder for people to get into, both thanks to the presentation and old-style of controls, RE4 is still easily accessible. Not to mention that, whereas the camp of the RE2 and RE3 was more or less unintentional, RE4 played wholeheartedly into that nature, so trying to go for a more "serious" approach is far less appealing, at least for me.

More to the point, this sort of remake is not exactly going to be as easy as those two were. RE4 is rightfully considered one of the greatest video games in the history of the medium, thanks to it pretty much blazing the trail for all modern third-person action games. To say the remake has really big shoes to fill is an understatement. Best I can see them doing is to not go completely 1:1, but instead branch off into its own direction. But the caveat is that it needs to still be interesting in its own right.

Tragically the trailer seems to heavily reference the 2005 game, this has got to be one of the bigger missed opportunities in gaming history to not finish 3.5 as even big time RE4 fans would admit it's all pretty been there, done that after over 9000 re-releases, right?

But we don't know what they might change up, they might try to connect Salazar and Umbrella in some way, in fact I bet there will be an attempt to tie the story in more with the rest of the series instead of essentially having nothing to do it.

But I almost feel like that's not a good idea, trying to "grandfather in" other story elements might be awkward, I wonder if they should either remake 4 or reuse 3.5 instead of trying to do both.

I wish I could get on the RE4 love train as much as most people, I did love it back in 2005, but imo while the village part of the game is great, I feel like once it gets to the castle and especially the island there's a dip in quality and overall it doesn't hold up great, people have a fond attachment because of how ground breaking it was for 2005, but I think if people gave it a clearer eyed look they realize that it is overrated.

For one thing it really struck me playing all the mainline games back to back last year how bullshit it is that 4 side steps the story that was being built up, now some gamers don't care about story but man, you set for multiple games a showdown with Umbrella that just never really happens?

A big reason I feel RE4 holds up is due to how well paced it is. Not one setpiece overstays its welcome for too long, and the game knows when to switch things up in terms of tone and location. It gives you just enough breathing room in between each horror and action sequence without dragging, and doesn't stay in one gear for too long.

So if there's any reason as to why RE4 is so beloved even now, it's that, and the pacing will be key as to whether or not the remake succeeds or not.

As for it sidestepping the overarching plot, believe it or not, some people actually liked that, as the mythology of the franchise is quite convoluted and at times hard to follow, meaning that RE4 going more standalone let them connect to it easier. Even now, this is a bit of a sore point for folks when it comes to the more recent titles. Just look at what Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw said about Village:

"As a series, Resident Evil just can't seem to kick the habit; every now and again, it pulls its head out of its bum for one game, but just can't resist that wonderful butthole smell, and is six inches deep again by the sequel. So, of course, we discover how the events of the last two games tie into the fucking Umbrella Corporation, and there's a new bonkers global conspiracy to create monsters and sell them as weapons, because it's nice how guns straightforwardly murder whatever we point them at, but maybe if there was a chance your weapon could turn around and suck your eyeballs out, then that'd add enough je ne sais quoi to stand out in a competitive marketplace.

It's like Resident Evil is a restaurant that's been trying to sell octopus burgers, and no one fucking likes the octopus burgers 'cos they're slimy and weird and the eyeballs look like they're judging me, so then they bring out a nice burger with no octopus and it sells really well, and the managers all go, "Great! Now, how do we work the octopus back into this?" Forget about the fucking octopus! The octopus doesn't work; why do you always insist on pushing the octopus?! Are you trying to launder a marine life-smuggling enterprise?!"
