Ian Smith being killed isn't the worst offense in the writing. If you don't follow TNO lore, the National Party doesn't take power in 1948 so apartheid isn't officially introduced- things like the Cape Franchise still exist for example, but for the most part the writing acts like apartheid is happening exactly the same as it did IRL. The player has two options before the Germans invade: liberalise or crackdown. Both are done poorly.
The liberalisering path legalises the ANC (in the 60's mind you) and integrates them into the armed forces, while doing 90's era policies like total equality in voting. This stops the ANC from revolting but it doesn't make sense, and imo makes the vietnam allegory the devs are doing make even less sense.
The crackdown path is just the "bad guy path" where everything goes wrong, and the ANC will revolt even if you try to suppress them. And the Boers still revolt too- which leads onto the WORST part... the Boers are FUNDING the ANC to accelerate violence in South Africa. Why???? Why would the BOERS give the blacks weapons??? Legit the worst "twist" I've ever seen.
The war isnt much better: the hippies in america for some reason oppose the war, even though theyre fighting nazis. also the writing doesnt take into account what you do as america. it'll give you events of people trying to avoid the draft, even though you haven't implemented a draft. its dogshit, and with the constant reworks that they're doing i imagine this'll be fixed- but who knows, they might fuck it up even more.
