Because he didn't like that working on it took away from his begging for no significant payoff and it was an easy excuse. It also showed that even back then his audience was tiny for someone who's been doing YT since the beginning. When you combine it with his weird habit of trying to make peaks the new expectation (hi vest streak making 100 per stream expected by him) and he was expecting near 1 million views for his reviews based on his homefront review.
It should be noted that he painted his dropping the channel as every video he uploaded getting demonetised (his claim of this is very similar to what razorfist had claimed a few months before) and yet the moment his main channel lost monetisation, he immediately moves to kogaming to have the videos monetised.

Yeah, I mean, I don't think people really care if their comment is posted publically but, rather, people just want him to see them and get triggered. It appears they succeeded on both of those counts but, sure, take your victory lap, Phil.
His new system actually seems to be worse for him. Since there was no approval process before, there was no reason he had to read them if he didn't want to. Now, he does have to read them all if he wants to highlight the positive ones. He'd probably say that if it was all just troll comments it would cause the positive ones to get lost in it and then he couldn't get feedback and suggestions from people, which is something he's never given one shit about and still doesn't.

A little late with this comment, but with that leather jacket and that slicked back, greasy hair, Phil always struck me here as someone who could've been used as cannon fodder in the first Max Payne.

Phil has always had a small group of legit regards that he goes out of his way to defend. Alex Sidella used to be the most notable one, he has a thread here somewhere, although I think he recently finally broke from pignosis and Phil disposed of him because he was spamming nigger in chat.
Why Phil only responds to Derich's repeated spamming questions and gives him special treatment is unknown. Phil doesn't for other obvious special needs people like Rob Warren that actually give him money too.
