The Elder Scrolls

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Unless Bethesda changed, Daggerfall isn't actually freeware, just free if you bought another in the series.

As for the game itself, how much of change is it playability-wise from Morrowind? I watched that retrospective that's getting pushed Youtube and it's got me interested.
It's closer to DND while still being TES

If you play Daggerfall, just bear in mind that you will need some way to levitate. Either play as a wizard and take Thaumaturgy as a major skill, or buy levitate potions.

Additional tips:
- Never leave town without a) some way to cure disease b) some way to cure poison.
- Infamously, some main story quests are timed. These quests are generally pretty well telegraphed, though. It's still something to bear in mind.
- If you play DFU, there is a option buried in the ini (unless it's been moved into the settings since I last played) called "smaller dungeons." I *strongly* recommend you turn this on unless you truly want the Daggerfall Experience™

For those who don't know, the "story" dungeons in Daggerfall are hand-crafted and are reasonably laid out. Every other dungeon (of which there are literally thousands) are huge. Rutskarn of Twenty Sided said it best in his Altered Scrolls series
Rutskarn said:
[...]There are thousands of dungeons in the game, and they are big. How big are they? So big that the guy so obsessed with Daggerfall he wrote a guide that remains definitive to this day put “smaller dungeons” at the top of his wish list for the sequel. Inconveniently large dungeons. Obnoxiously large, labyrinthine, three-dimensional dungeons full of secret passages and strange fixtures and dungeon ecosystems. Fun anecdote: on my first playthrough, I accepted a quest to go to a dungeon and kill a certain amount of orcs. I was in that dungeon for three out-of-game weeks, countless real-world hours, discovering new rooms and levels all the time, and I didn’t even get to the part with the orcs.
Seriously, if you haven't read The Altered Scrolls I strongly recommend it. But yeah, turn "smaller dungeons" on if you can.

Both Daggerfall and Arena have been free downloads on the Bethesda site for a few years now (over 5 i believe?). Everyone's only freaking about it now cuz Microsoft shut down the Bethesda Launcher and put all their games on Steam.

For playing it, as a veteran player I also recommend Daggerfall Unity + this Vanilla+ modlist. It fixes a lot of objectively shitty game mechanics and adds some restored content.

Another size comparison, this time between Bethesda's Skyrim and Cyrodiil and Project Tamriel's.

Almalexia and Imperial City seem leagues ahead of any other city (maybe Daggerfall or Alinor would be close in terms of size, but I remember the High Rock map shows Daggerfall on a similar scale to Vivec, I guess it makes sense as Dunmer and Imperials are the two most populace races respectively

Just a random thought but I think Breezehome is probably the worst place to live in Skyrim in-universe. Not just because it's smaller and simpler than the other player homes, but because it's right next to War Maidens. Imagine waking up every morning to CLANK CLANK CLANK and having it continue all day until evening. Plus it's got a tanning area which means it's gotta smell real bad (real life tanneries during the middle ages weren't allowed inside city limits because of the smell. Dead animal carcasses plus tanning chemicals i.e. urine equals nasty stench.) No wonder it was for sale.

at least they keep the sap lickers and the whiskers out of the cities, if only they would do something about that uppity redguard across the street though

Still not as bad as Vlindrel Hall in Markarth

Maybe it'll be done this decade!

I am almost at the 100 hour mark in Nehrim (dealing with crashes every 1 hour or so) and I got to say, it sure is impressive.
That it was made for free and as a mode, show the dedication the modders have.

also, just wanted to say that the smaller dungeons option in DFU is experimental and some of the procedural quests break with it on. I personally would just keep the larger dungeons for the true Daggerfall experience, but the Archaeologists Guild mod adds an item that outlines the quest item on your screen in a dungeon after you've explored it a little first.

I have brinoff, serena, brother whatshisname from the cannibal quest, cicero, aranea, and a brotherhood assassin following me. It's fun tbh. I would trade Aranea with Frea but idk if I have to let everyone go before asking her or just aranea

Sort of thinking about giving The Elder Scrolls Online a spin, although I'm not sure if I have it in me to commit to an MMO.

If nothing else, it apparently being solo friendly could almost be like playing a traditional Elder Scrolls game that can't be paused.

It was up literally yesterday. I was mid read and planned to finish it today :(

I played over 300 hours and stopped a little after Summerset came out. It's a good game, but the combat is absolute shite (in my experience as a mage lightning guy build). The quests are great though and it's a treat for diehard fans that like the weird esoteric lore. There's a c0da KINMUNE reference lol

Interesting the Gavin Clayton (DFU's creator) hasn't even retweeted this. I wonder if they needed to talk to Bethesda about this? I know they mentioned DFU in the changelog of the latest Daggerfall Steam update, so maybe he helped them out with that? The GOG cut has a good list of mods, but I'd recommend disabling DREAM and Roleplay and Realism your first playthrough. Most of them are just visual mods.
I think Besthesda is kind of out of the way regarding DFU. It essentially is an open-source Unity toolkit that just reads Daggerfall files. There is nothing there for Bethesda to chew on.
Now Daggerfall itself, I bet there was some discussion. I heard GOG did some communicating, but it (obviously) worked out. DF is more or less freeware; tacking it on to an open-source port and community mods is not a real stretch.

I'm glad Daggerfall and DFU are getting the attention they deserve. I've followed the DFU project since the beginning and it's truly amazing how they've modernized (and in a sense, finished) this masterpiece of a game.
I think it cannot be said better. I am really looking forward to when we hit 1.0, the stability of versions alone is going to cause an explosion of mods and even total conversions.

On the Daggerfall subreddit there were posts from devs of mods that were included in the GOG cut talking about how GOG either didn't ask them for permission to use their mod, or actually did ask them permission, but went ahead and released it before the dev responded. GOG cut is a lil shady.

The modders put up something out in public that's 100% free, and if you go to the modlist in-game you'll find all the proper credits and links. What's there to piss their eyes about?

I see both sides. First, GOG should have done more due diligence before going forward. Not that they have recently released an apology and pulled the mods in question.

HOWEVER, these are fucking mods for an open-source port for a 24-year-old freeware game (but acts more like shareware at this point). If you got the credit, be happy about it. I would be pleasantly surprised if I got my mod published in a free bundle with clear credits. Peeps need to stop being biggity-wiggity-bitches and be glad that more people are enjoying their work.
