Oh, "Morbid: A True Crime Podcast" is my other go-to. It's a funny one as well. And a limited series one that was really interesting was "Missing on 9/11". Oh, and "Disgraceland". Last two aren't funny ones, definitely more serious. I like the funny ones better, myself.

Sorry for the sperg. I'm a podcast dork.
My coworker actually recommended Morbid to me! I’ve been meaning to listen to it but am lazy lol.

I love Disgraceland! He covers a lot of interesting artists that i would have never thought (or cared) to research. Big Lurch was super messed up.

My other two faves are last podcast on the left and Generation Why.

Admittedly there's something very refreshing about seeing photos that aren't staged, filtered, edited and used to present something, an image that is quite removed from actual reality. However, when you can practically smell what you're seeing because of squalor that's something else. I love this thread.

I prefer longform articles to podcasts.

I love this. I feel like the humor in it almost make you forget these people are total shitbags as well. I’ll never forget seeing those chicks snorting pills in the hospital room after the baby was born or that little boy yelling “Darrell’s this 🖕” Tubi has some pretty good documentaries for being free!

Fun fact Jesco was on the ending credits of a Roseanne episode :)

If anyone has any other hillbilly/white trash books or documentaries to recommend , I’ll glad take them!
I’ve seen WWWofWV recommended so many times, and I finally watched it tonight. 10/10 brilliant. Not just for being entertaining or shocking, but it really touched me, especially Kirk reuniting with her son.
ETA for true crime nerds, I’m recommending True Crime Garage podcast.

I just watched “Goodnight Sugar Babe: the murder of Vera Jo Riegle” and it’s totally on theme for this thread. It’s a sad documentary about a poor sped cruelly misused and murdered by a clan of evil hillbillies but it’s got deathfats, fake pregnancies, ineffective CPS, white people claiming to be Crips, gloriously awful tshirts, lots of FAS face, incest, and a hobo boyfriend.

I’d advise reading up on the case first because there’s so many characters in the doc it was hard to keep them straight. Beside the sad life of poor Vera Jo, this film is otherwise full of wondrous characters. And you Sarg stans will get a better understanding of what he’s probably like irl.

I had to watch that Doc in sections. It was too much of a roller coaster of emotions for me. I think mostly I was really really sad then really pissed off that these hellbillies essentially got away with it.

It was on par to the Sammy-verse it was startling.

Big Lurch is seriously mentally ill and I feel really bad for him.

Also I'll throw Crime Junkie into the ring. I don't like it as much as Morbid, but it's definitely worth listening to.

Adding to the list of interesting trashy and/or poor people stories, you guys might like the YouTube channel "Soft White Underbelly". This photographer takes portraits and interviews people, mostly on Skid Row in California, but he's gone to other places, too. This one about an inbred family from Odd, West Virginia has a similar vibe to The Wild Whites of West Virginia. (There are follow-up videos on them and actually a whole Appalachia playlist as well.)

Seconding the recommendation of Soft White Underbelly. His series of videos on the Whittaker family from WV is wonderful - you see the conditions they live in and it's undoubtedly pretty grubby but you feel so much for them. The photographer has a way of bringing out the humanity in them (actually, in most of his interviewees) and you really root for them! He fires out videos like nobody's business so I have a lot to catch up on, but the last one I saw was posted last month, in which he drives through a neighbourhood in Philadelphia and the streets are just peppered with homeless folk and people out of their trees on Spice. It's a brilliant and fascinating channel but be prepared to FEEL!

Looks like Kim and Steve have already broken up . I guess the lure of hobo dick was just too much for him. Kim looks smelly, I hope she hits up Darnell. Wake queen Sammie from her slumber .
Does anyone else wonder what Sammie does when she’s not posting? I have a feeling she has a few catfish pages, probably collects pictures of babies and posts in groups . She’s terminally online, so even if she isn’t posting, she’s lurking .

Holy shit this is the best picture of Daddy Dalton ever, I can’t breathe.
It’s up there with Sarge’s pictures. 8856F655-C0BA-41DE-BBCA-9D6CAE0DE76B.jpeg

Hahaha I was going to comment on this one too. It doesn't even look real. What exactly is happening here? The pajamas (I think?), the cowboy boots, poor Aiden who desperately wants to get away from this freak show...

I probably spelled Aiden wrong, and by that I mean I spelled it correctly, not however those shitbags chose to do it.

The anonymous gunt delicately resting on the fire truck bumper. The way Aiden is looking at it, back then prob thought any blob was his mom, but he’s confused because the tacky tshirt is clean, tucked in and the pants are belted.

Just subscribed to Soft White Underbelly! I have seen the inbred family one, watched it after seeing the Wild Whites and got in a big Appalachia kick 😂

It was Halloween kim and him dressed as babies, but he also did zombie like makeup but it just looks like dirt lmfao. I think all the shoes he owns is that boot set. Probably stinks bad.

That dude that barks like a dog in Soft White Underbelly gets on my nerves. I know he can't help it but it would get annoying.

Related to Appalachia, there is a documentary from PennState called Darlene Chronicles (Secondary link with less "clutter" here) -- if you've enjoyed those others you may like this. There is also a 2020 update as well, and the user RUNNING INTO HISTORY also searches for the home some years on.

Edit - did a search for others I've watched:
The Hollow (1975) - Documents the hardships faced by a poverty-level Adirondack community.

A New Home for Virgie/A New Home for Virgle (Final Edit)

American Hollow (1999)

Ngl I’m laughing even harder because there’s no low effort fake blood or anything, just Dalton looking like he climbed out from under a bridge looking grimy.

10/10 zombie baby costume, the boots and hat are a bonus.
