Terri's case was much less straightforward than Archie or Jahi's, because she breathed on her own (couldn't swallow, though, hence the feeding tube) and still had all her brainstem reflexes. She postured, maintained her primitive startle reflex, and could even track things with her eyes. I remember that her father in particular was very convinced that Terri was "in there" and actively responding to commands, while in reality she functioned on a developmental level of a newborn. It's unclear whether she could perceive pain, but there are unsettling videos of her groaning and whimpering as if she really was in some kind of discomfort.

Terri was blind, which was revealed upon her autopsy. She wasn't tracking anything with her eyes, her parents had been selectively releasing snippets of video to make it seem like she was responding to them. They would record three hours waving a balloon in front of her or repeating, "Terri, open your eyes" over and over, and eventually her mindless body would move in a way they could seize upon to pretend she was really in there. The thought of a child going through all these emotions is heartbreaking. He has missed out on so much life… but like others have touched on, broken children often make broken adults.

I feel like he could have been turned around. Kids like Archie are really up shit creek with the school system how it is. Even really fantastic parents have kids who struggle. Social services are useless. CAMHS turns down kids because they've only had one or 2 suicide attempts or havent hit starving BMI yet. If the will was there to help these kids properly it would never have come to this. Its so frustrating to see young people have the joy crushed out of them by life because they don't fit the mould.

I literally never see doctors call it what it is. We are finding very effective treatments with potentially less side effects (than drugs, like in the article) but unless doctors stop throwing up their hands and saying 'oh its just autism' these kids suffer.

Wow. That's going to be controversial. The other week ABA was in the news for using electric shocks. Not like this, like a shock collar to stop a dog barking (without any evidence that its beneficial, humane or works). I wonder how this will be received.

It's extreme but if it means a kid who would be insitutitutionalised can live at home. I can think of a kid right off the bat who's kicking the shit out of his mother on the daily and who's long term future looks residential as he gets too big to handle. If it meant he could stay in the family home and not be exposed to the possibility of abuse in residential care it could be a huge deal.

It would be a great outcome if Archies law became "MRIs 100% count as proof of death now". Combine that with Charlie's Law being "parents in this situation are banned from turning it into a public circus in case it prejudices the legal case. From now on the whole thing is done in private the same as family courts".

I believe she isn't eligible for legal aid now becuse of the pro bono work they had done. Very odd that this wasn't explored at the beginning, as it would have covered it.

So that's 13k what about the other 15k or more thats been raised and all the money raised that wasn't part of the gofuckmes? They had the nice purple specially made collection pots out at the vigil.
