I like Clerks too (I used to do so more until Kevin showed who he was) but the arguments he threw are very easily debunkable even with just Ep 1 in mind.
It just makes him look extremely petty and infantile...then again, thats what most of the prequel hatred ultimately came down to.
Infantile pettiness.
Even with its clunky directing and cringe-worthy dialogue, it’s got a way more interesting plot synopsis than the entire What If Trilogy.
Hell, even with its flaws, you can’t deny their originality and imagination.
Even at their worst, the prequels are about the decay of democracies and the rise of empires that take their place when the people themselves beg for an easy solution (which, you know, is all over history, especially Rome). It doesnt help we are experiencing it ourselves...we didnt get to the emperialism phase (yet...or at least outright being declared).
Someone gets it.
Also the "fans" complaining that the Jedi are not runing around like superheros. Even shown in ROTJ, Jedi are space mediators who would rather use diplomacy before getting into "aggressive negotiations". "Oh Anakin and the Jedi talk weird" despite they have to be clear and calm dealing with multitudes of alien civilizations. I said it before and will say it again, the "fans" have a Sith-like mentality.
Because they didnt really get what the Jedi are all about. They are inspired by several things, like monks and midevil knights but they all have one thing in common. They are suppose to be honorable, wise and only raise their swords once there is no other choice and/or the enemy tries to strike first.
They ask, why Qui-gon just couldnt cut down Watto and free the slaves. Because thats not how it realistically works. Not only it wouldnt end slavery, but it would make the local powers very fucking pissed at the Jedi and the government institution they are meant to represent. Qui-Gon only "won" because he played off Watto's hubris and "cheated" a bit to get what he wanted (tho you can make the argument cheating cheaters, which Im sure Watto also was, isnt so bad than to cheat an honest person).
The Jedi are not super heroes and they were never meant to be. They arent there to solve ALL of the problems of the galaxy, simply to help out. It is for the REPUBLIC to solve the slavery problem, which, as we have seen, is falling apart due to dysfunctional levels of internal corruption and self interest (so amazing how its just all starting to feel so close to home now, huh?).
Hell, even super heroes, at their most basic, are not cops, are not jury and much less executioners. People complain that heroes always let criminals and villains live...and thats the problem...heroes arent the ones to do that. All they do is a service to the public (simply because it was the right thing) and let the system decide what to do with them. When a villain keeps coming back (outside of Joker immunity), its the fault of the system rather than the hero.
I legit dont know what people want of heroes these days, hell, I dont know even if our definition of hero is the same as theirs.
