What happened was he quit The Escapist because they were making him vary his topics and keep his videos short, so he left for more creative freedom. Unfortunately this led to him losing fans and interest, so he went trans as a way to deflect criticism.
He actually had pretty consistent numbers before coming out as non-binary (August 2020) then two months later his weekly views dropped and have stayed at like half the amount he used to get, even when he went full AGP and started to do the intro/outro dressed as a woman with the wig (Jan 2021) he didn't have any noticable drop in views.

Reminds me of that SA post I saw here from a few days ago describing the perfect dystopian hellscape communist paradise.

This hilarious inability to imagine the world without Capitalism (when claiming to do so) and thus failing utterly to engage with core aspects of human beings, societies and so on is so common it actually has a name: capitalist realism. (It has an offshoot in neoliberal capitalist realism, which is more related to an inability to imagine big corpo not being there and not having your best interest at heart).
I cannot determine if this is profound mental retardation at play or a very high grade troll.

And technically all journalists are all just failed writers, legitimate hacks who lack the creativity to write a compelling story of their own design and so default to essentially paraphrasing whatever story their higher-ups dictate to them. Jim actually fits this mold perfectly, except for the fact he doesn't seem to have any higher-ups if I'm remembering correctly.
Proper journalism is an art of accurately collecting, verifying, and conveying facts and events in an understandable way, but most modern journalists don't want to be journalists, they basically want to be preachers. Fluff pieces have always existed, sure, but they were there to hit a quota, when nothing else happened or the legitimacy couldn't be verified of anything greater.

As a failed writer, how dare you lump me in with those sub-human scum people call "Journalists" us failed writers become mediocre English teachers thank you very much.

Reminds me of Alan Moore's Miracleman final issue where things goes almost exactly the same only that Moore sees Humanity throwing away it's free will and accepting super heroes as Gods as a very negative thing and the ultimate "Golden Cage"

Let this be a lesson: if your business is entertainment, you should avoid alienating huge chunks of your potential audience. In other words, don't fuck with your bread and butter.
The main problem is, that seemingly when someone gets a large enough following they start to believe that their own shit doesn't stink, so to speak. Totalbiscuit was a prime example. The other issue is that the bigger a channel or creator gets, the more attention they get from people who try and convert them and get them drinking their troony cool aid. Look what happened to Jim, he went from being sort of an obnoxious edgy sort to his current trooning out arc.

Jim Sterling;s career is all due to popularity of the nerd critic. For decades people have loved angry nerds bashing mediocrity in entertainment. Whether that was Siskel and Ebert unanimously panning a Hollywood Turkey or Music Critics trashing a lousy album. When it's done well an angry nerd is just hilarious to watch because it's fun to see a grown adult act like a mediocre Disney movie is quite literally the worst thing in the world. This is one of my favorite pieces of old media, a segment of The Dick Cavette Show where author Erich Segal has a heated conversation with critic John Simon. It's a great debate because it's two very well educated men heatedly arguing over the merits of entertainment that's made implicitly for the masses, the "Hoi Polloi" as they both refer to it as.

But there's a fine line between critic and cynic, and critics have to know what they value in media in order for their critiques to not inevitably descend into miserable nerd nitpicking and autism. Siskel and Ebert would devote almost every episode of their show to a film they loved, whether that was a new release or a film classic, I love this short video Ebert wrote towards the end of his life on the greatness of Citizen Kane. Citizen Kane is a somewhat infamous movie because for all the praise critics praise heap upon it a not so controversial opinion is that it is in fact a boring movie. But in this short video Ebert should be able to make a Citizen Kane hater understand why this movie holds such high acclaim.

The only thing in this world I think Jim Sterling loves is himself. He's turned into a drag queen Ignatius Reilly.
Further to this, the situation these days is people are not critics, they are reviewers.

Critics are people with a deep understanding of the genre or medium and comment on its merits from that perspective.

The red letter media guy, whether you like him or think he is a manchild hack, he does have a deep knowledge of film making, cinematography, story and plot structure, scripting and what makes as close to possible “objectively” good movie.

Reviewers on the other hand just tell you what they like.

Reviewers do have their place and a good reviewer who has a good eye or ear for particular genres can be a great go to for finding things you will like.

But most are just hacks who only appreciate what they like, thinking anything they don’t like is bad.

As I don’t follow Jim Sterling, I can’t say what kind of critic or reviewer he is.

What do others think?

When you're a fool who makes a lot of bad decisions, having someone take responsibility for you sounds like the greatest thing ever.

I wouldn't call Jim a critic or a reviewer. I only saw a couple of his actual reviews and they all sucked. His bread and butter was and I guess still is the Jimquisition, which is more of a commentary on the game industry as a whole. Back in the day it used to discuss actual interesting problems that needed to be discussed - Nowadays it serves for Jims identity politics and wrestling I guess.

Honestly Jim was a good industry commentator at one time. Unfortunately he ran out of ideas after about 4 videos and only bothered to have maybe 1 or 2 new ideas a year.
Now I assume he's realized he doesn't have to have new ideas as long as he dresses up like steampunk rainbow bright and steals valor from the LGBT community.

eta: Answered my own question by sifting through the most recent pages, apparently he genuinely identifies as transgender. These AGPs really are the epitome of poe's law, my first instinct was absolutely "Man I didn't know you still could get away with making a cross dressing character for comedy purposes nowdays"
He identifies as trans, but we have our suspicions he lied about being on HRT and is just saying yes to the dress until such times as that particular grift is no longer lucrative for him.

Latest JQ Breakdown (in every sense of the word):
  • Gay wrestling shit (literally)
  • Poorly filmed intro (buy a fucking lapel mic Jim Jesus Christ)
  • Forced meme alert (fails to be funny, as per)
  • Monkey Island fans are upset the new game has a shitty Tumblr art style (even Jim agrees it's not good, shockingly)
  • Jim rambles for 4 minutes before finally arriving at the point: 0.0001% of fans left mean comments on Ron Gilbert's blog
  • Jim can't understand why gamers get annoyed at unnecessary changes to games/characters but not at sexual abuse allegations at studios that don't affect the games
  • Jim trots out the 'ACTUALLY IT IS YOU WHO IS A SNOWFLAKE' argument we've heard a million times
  • Utterly irrelevant jab at Activision-Blizzard
  • Cringe outro where Jim complains about being attacked by midges (based TERF insects)
TL;DR: This entire video could have been summed up in a tweet or a tiktok. Waste of my fucking time.

if i recall, he also burnt a lot of bridges with the industry and other reviewers.
