Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

For the record, Lawrence and his partner Takashi Masunaga openly hate the original Jonny Quest from the 60s and took the job to make it "less shit", which to them meant going for what they felt was realism.
I'd be on the Falk side of that, even if the '60s animation was barely over the level of Clutch Cargo (and apparently the Clutch Cargo creators outright claimed it had been ripped off from them).
Should've gotten Michael Kovach instead
He's kind of in need of a job lately too, thanks A24.

Backing up to the 90s, lately, I've been reading up on the production shitstorm that was The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest, particularly two interviews on fansite Questfan, one with Lance Falk and another with Peter Lawrence. Each worked on a separate incarnation of the show (Lawrence on Season 1, Falk on Season 2), and each one throws some rather pointed jabs at the other for how they handled their respective episodes. For the record, Lawrence and his partner Takashi Masunaga openly hate the original Jonny Quest from the 60s and took the job to make it "less shit", which to them meant going for what they felt was realism. Falk, on the other hand, is an OG JQ fan and, while Lawrence and Takashi were making their version, pushed for something more along those lines before finally getting his wish when Davis Doi and Larry Houston made what became known as Season 2.

The issues the show went through are probably too numerous to go into here, but for the sake of comparison, I'll just give a TL;DR of what each had to say:
  • Lance Falk had wanted to work on the show from the beginning, but quickly realized that his love and passion for the 60s Jonny Quest wasn't welcome under Lawrence and Takashi. After an unsuccessful attempt at pitching a retool to get the show out of the quickly deepening issues, he basically said "fuck this" and moved to Warner Bros. to do prop design until, as he recalls, Lawrence and Takashi were booted for spending two and a half years burning $11 million on what turned out to be product of unacceptable quality to Hanna Barbera. Producers Cos Anziolatti and John Eng were called in to make 26 watchable episodes out of the bits and pieces that their predecessors had managed to finish, while Doi and Houston were given the greenlight to make 26 Jonny Quest episodes out of whole cloth, redesigning the characters, replacing most of the voices, and bringing the stories more in line with classic Quest, and it was these episodes that Falk worked on.
  • Peter Lawrence, for his part, denies any wrongdoing in the production issues (even debating a claim that Dick Sebast was hired first, claiming the two were hired together), instead passing the blame to HB's executives, particularly Fred Seibert (who he trashes as "a truly pathetic and self-adoring executive") and Sherry Gunther (who he apparently had such a hard time with that he accused anyone remotely willing to defend her as being paid off or otherwise friendly with her). Like I said, he regards the 60s Quest episodes as a tone-deaf relic, and really goes after Falk for trying to make his episodes more like those.
Basically, Falk and Lawrence both clearly hate each other's work, even seeming to hate each other at times. I think whomever you agree with may depend on which batch of episodes you prefer. Personally, I've never actually seen a full episode of either run, only small clips, so I don't really have a horse in the fight.
I miss when shows tried to sell themselves on being cutting edge.

Ironically, the Russian government has posted about his death on Twitter... then again, that open letter was suppressed pretty quick when they said you could get fifteen years in jail for speaking out against the war.
Joke's on them, couldn't put him in jail for 15 years when he had a few months at most.

The Clutch Cargo guys couldn't even animate lip movements. Who wanted to rip that off?

The original Jonny Quest was barely better, although it was actual animation, not just whatever the fuck they were doing on Clutch Cargo. But the themes were fairly similar, I seriously don't think JQ ripped it off, but if you think about it a bit, and squint your eyes, you might be able to see it.

Jonny Quest may have come out of an attempt to adapt the old radio show Jack Armstrong, actually.

There weren't very many western shows in the 90s. It might have been interesting if, like the Buzz Lightyear cartoon, you had a lighthearted take on old Western cliches.
Like a sanitized version of Lucky Luke or something? No buckteeth kung-fu fighting Chinamen running laundromats, but the redskin indians would probably have still been used.

Not that LL is the only Spaghetti Western cartoon out there, but it's the first thing I think of when I hear of cowboys and Western Animation. There's also Cocco Bill but I know almost nothing about it. Going by what I'm reading, his whole thing is way more absurd than either Woody or Luke.

Very true.

Now I'm reminded of Bruno Bozzetto's "West & Soda"
I enjoy Bruno Bozzetto's animated shorts, so I'm definitely putting this on my watch list. He really has a way with visual storytelling and usage of colors. The music used in his animations is nothing short of fantastic, but unfortunately it seems there were never full versions or proper uploads of them. Or maybe I'm just retarded and haven't found it yet.

Here's some shorts uploaded on his YouTube channel.

Very underated guy for what he has accomplished in his life.

This was his first animated film he made in 1958, using what little he could find to animate, but was enough to send him on his way.

His second feature from 1968...

Also quite versatile in live action.

Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal Season 2 trailer is here.

I bet Adult Swim's executives are seething pink in the face mad that Primal is a five time Emmy award winner. Imagine having a Midas TV show on your network and you hate it because it doesn't fit into your stoner hipster worldview of what quality entertainment is.

Scanning through this thread, it's like one big funeral for animation as a medium.
Apart from generational drifts, which have been present in human history ever since the first civilizations arised, do take into account that even dark ages have their gems. While Japan is one of the few places where the industry is still soaring high, there are good, enjoyable cartoons out there even if the mainstream now is dominated by Rebecca Sugar tier horseshit!

I'm a bit late to this sad news. Mattel copyright struck all of the 4k 60fps upscaled Hotwheels movies on Youtube back in April of this year. Sad moment.
This is why I try to archive things I like whenever I can, sounds bonkers but I'm really paranoid with this shit considering how fucking retarded YouTube is with their handling of copyright. There are videos I used to watch years ago that no longer exist on the web as their creators either lost or deleted their channels, outside of the few guys that archived their copies, they are gone for good unless some autistic guy like myself decides to gather together their archives and release them back lol!

This really is the case if you like independent creators, older videos and/or videos with few views (for modern standards). I had a particular video I liked that was "lost" for years, I searched for it to no avail until I bumped into some guy's channel where he hosted it, until some asshole copystruck it and it went down again. Lucky for me, I learned my lesson this time!

Maybe, but they would need to be fucking idiots to treat Tartakovsky like shit. He's built a reputation for himself with many quality works over the years, burning bridges with a guy like him is one of the stupidest decisions a Network could make. If anything, they must have learned from Korgoth of Barbaria, where they cancelled a wildly well received show over costs but not petty horseshit, they wouldn't have let Primal happen if they are that petty!

I've noticed that AS has a habit of giving something good a shot and then canning it immediately after, "you had your chance, now get out." I wouldn't be surprised if Smiling Friends were on the chopping block. They also seem to keep total shit on life support for unreasonably long periods of time until they just can't.

They're probably aware that Tartakovsky is irreplaceable and untouchable, and they need him more than he needs them, which is why it's funny to me that they have to put up with a guy whose current work is masculine by design and gives them the DBZ Vietnam flashbacks.
