(Yglesias later was strongly advised to leave Vox and later suggested this was the start of multiple issues.)

Ithink the uncanny valley effect has to do with the male proportions of the face. Overall his face was feminized somewhat and softened, but his head is too large and his face is too long to be female. It's a very unnatural juxtaposition our brains are not used to seeing, so subconsciously we feel something is off about the person.
