This is the problem with being old: I remember when this exact bit would have been dismissed as funny, or at the very worst "a modest proposal" level stuff and not to be taken seriously.
During the 2000s this is Friday night open mic at a shitty comedy or drag club in the Castro district, and nobody would have blinked.
Problem is, all those unhinged sounding criticisms from that same time of the LGBT are coming home to roost now that people like Keffals are the face of the LGBT community. And not that Keffals is unique, in fact the problem Lucas has is that he's not the first, he's just arguably the worst so far, following the pattern of nearly a decade of ever escalating maladjusted weirdos that know nothing but a lust for power, and will use every ounce of goodwill the 2000s built up for the community to bludgeon everyone and everything that dares to say "boo" by using a rainbow flag, regardless of how it might reflect on the community, and lord knows it has.
When the community legitimizes those criticisms that once sounded unhinged by doing the exact things the criticism said would happen, and allows obvious malcontents to burn that goodwill by promoting these people as the face of the community, suddenly you can't count on the font of goodwill that the community once had to nab the benefit of the doubt, and once obvious jokes become statements given serious side-eye when, for example, the speaker unironically believes that convincing impressionable children to castrate themselves and providing them the tools to do so is just fine and dandy.
Maybe we wouldn't be here if the old guard had stood up at basically any point and said "NOW WAIT A MINUTE" and catalyzed some meaningful pushback from within the community...but there wasn't, there isn't, and here we are.
