Oh it’s certainly some kind of abuse. The question is did she actually get Stockholmed and agree to go along with it and at what point did that actually occur?

I’m not a fan of Barb, never have been. I think she’s incredibly manipulative and probably is the biggest reason Chris is the way he is. She very well could have used being a fuck mommy to manipulate Chris into all kinds of stuff. When did it actually start and how willing was she to go along with it is another question entirely. If I had to guess based on what I know, they’ve always had a weird relationship and their were subtle cues both picked up on. Bob even once commented on how odd their dynamic was.

This is why I can’t say it’s 100% Chris’ fault. Not that it excuses what happened, but Barb was probably at least somewhat complicit in what happened. Again whether she was Stockholmed or just sort of accepted and went along with what was happening because she got enjoyment or privileges out of it is what I’m still speculating about. I’ve mostly been quiet on this thread because while wild speculation is fun, this case is pretty disturbing and I don’t want to say anything concrete without knowing all the facts. Instead I just use stickers to agree or disagree or say I enjoyed a particular comment, no need to post insane theories without evidence.

Nobody is saying that it wasn't rape if Barb had dementia, but there are many ways it could have happened. For example, sexual inappropriateness is a common symptom of dementia, and Chris could very well be too dumb to know this, and assumed that Barb was making the first move. Still rape, but because Chris is delusional and stupid. You're insisting that Chris is this power hungry rapist predator, but that's just as speculative as all the other theories.

Barb being a participant or not does not factor into their decision to escalate the case. The prosecution decides on who they want to charge, even if they know Barb fully consented, they could simply decide not to charge her with incest and only charge Chris. Even if they know Barb raped Chris, they could choose not to charge her if they think it would be hard to convince the jury that an old woman is a rapist.

Chris squaring up against a cognizant adult is one thing. Chris squirming up against a geriatric with glass bones, a vacant stare into the depths of the abyss and who can barely remember their own name is a completely separate thing. Chris is more than just stupid. His letters since being arrested show him to be a liar and devious, trying to justify, cover his tracks and shift the blame to Barb for his own actions. He knew what he was doing. This wasn't just a big whoopsie. He went out and bought a sex manual and tried to lie to people about what was going on after he let it slip. Besides, Chris was appointed Barb's caretaker and was sent by Barb's doctor to take classes in elder care. He may have even been paid as an in home care person by the State. He had a responsibility to Barb that he clearly violated. I don't think we need to make excuses for his incest. And it isn't as huge a leap as you make it out to see Barb as the incapacitated victim and Chris as the rapist. I think that is about as self-evident as you can get.

We know exactly when Chris started having sex with Barb. He names the date. He had never had any sexual contact with her before that. There is no evidence that Barb was fine and dandy after he diddled her. However, there is evidence that the authorities visited the house a week later and immediately put Barb in protective custody and reported Chris to the cops. Chris said that Barb was "getting better" because of his biweekly sex romps. Better than what? More compliant? Giving up and letting him dance on her bones without yelling stop? C'mon. Barb had nothing to gain from letting Chris schtupp her. She was the one that always held the power in their relationship. So it's fair to ask, what changed to make a sexual relationship possible? The most obvious answer to that question is dementia... Barb's power disappeared when she became mentally helpless and Chris took advantage of that. No perp is going to outright admit that. But the situation we have here is clearer than most.

Chris can babble about the merge, claim to be Jesus and say that sex with his mom was "spiritual cleansing" all he wants. That doesn't make him legally insane. He has been examined and determined to be fit to stand trial. They wouldn't be proceeding with a trial if that wasn't the case. The insanity defense is off the table. Perhaps Heilberg can use it for mitigation, but he's going to have an uphill battle trying that, because Chris's babbling is mixed in equal parts with self-justification for his criminal acts, shifting the blame to the victim, and complete lack of empathy for his mother's situation in all this. Chris's babbling would do more to sink his case than it would to mitigate his crimes.
