Genderbending has kind of been a thing in Japanese culture for a while now. Once you start actively looking for it you'll be able to list off some examples. But it was never intended to be a transgender thing, and by the look of the earlier examples the idea of medical transitioning never really entered play. They dress like a woman but they're a guy, simple as. The idea that they need to be explicitly identified as transgender is unmistakably the product of western culture. It's basically the 2022 equivalent of 4kids replacing rice balls with jelly doughnuts in Pokémon. They did it for the benefit of western audiences and anyone that tries to pass it off as a "nAtUrAl eVoLuTiOn oF tHe cHaRaCtEr" is lying or fucking retarded.
