Creative works you enjoyed until politics happened - "How politics made me hate Welcome to Nightvale and other things"

I quite enjoyed seasons 1-4 for what they were, but I found season 5 borderline unwatchable and didn't even bother with season 6 anymore. It really does get worse than this episode and according to the 1-star reviews I read there is a super cringe "evil toxic masculinity" one as well. A lot of people blame the switch to Netflix with season 4.

Yeah, I've gotten a few episodes into S5 and it's not great. Old storyline being rehashed, shit like that, I'm sure there will be more crap....
I think at some point all "keeping a secret" shows fall flat on their face. Definitely happened with Suits which started alright but at a certain point the whole point of the show disappears. Lucifer was built around the inside joke of Lucifer being actually Lucifer and that pretty much disappeared. Makes you wonder why the show keeps going.

I thought Lucifer was mostly fairly consistent in quality. Perhaps a bit of a dip in the middle but I found the last two seasons some of the most enjoyable. Michael was an excellent foil to Lucifer, Mazikeen despite becoming a little domesticated was always fairly fun. And some of my favourite character moments came in the last two seasons. In particular Mazikeen mocking Danial for Amenidial carrying him "in his arms! Like a little baby!". The episode "Danial Spinoza, Naked and Alone" was ace and couldn't have worked without the build up from previous stories and seasons.

Some weak stuff like the bit with his daughter and the psychiatrist was stretching realism a little by the end (not her fault). They finally brought Chloe in, resolved the will they / wont they bit. Tom Welling has aged gracefully and made a cracking villain. The Social Justice episode someone mentioned landed like a lead turd and I can't imagine the writers didn't know it. I thought it actually got better later when more of the secrets were out because plots could be less contrived to prevent romantic and dramatic resolutions. It flowed more naturally. Also, Trixie actually turned into a little shit by the end!

Anyway, just one person's take.

As I'm still on S5 early, once Michael dropped the "it was all me" story line like a nuke, I really want to check out completely. Sometimes you can pull off the everything bad was me type stuff, but I really dislike agency being removed from characters in that manner.

Ah, sorry. I hope I didn't accidentally spoil anything. I don't think I did.

FWIW, I don't actually believe Michael when he says that and not to give anything away but I don't think the show necessarily supports it, either. You can definitely proceed without taking him at his word. I mean, assuming you're talking about insinuations of involvement with the Rebellion. If you're talking about more direct stuff you see in the episodes then sure - but he's a big schemer and manipulator. Kind of Lucifer without the honour.

Well anyway, don't waste time if you're not enjoying it but I would certainly stick it out to the end of S5 if I were you. S6 is a bit more of a wrap-up in its way but there's stuff in there I like.

Either because the writers don't know the secret from the start and have to keep pulling things out of their ass as they go along, eventually writing themselves into a corner (Lost is a prime example there). Or because the secret is resolved and it takes a while until they come up with something equally compelling again (Twin Peaks Season 2 after the murderer is identified).

Once the secret resolves itself, it's time to end the show. This doesn't apply to all shows, but it should; there should be one master storyline and once that is over the show should be ended. Whether that theme is abstract or straightforward the show should end, The Wire does this well with the cycles of urban life. it takes you full circle, so you can start to see and feel the beginning of the next circle, but that's it. It's an abstract theme, the plot line encorporates the theme, but doesn't shove it in your face.
Futurama does this well too, if not 4 times. Not entirely their fault because they kept getting pseudo canceled.

Babylon 5 is still my favorite sci-fi show because it was conceived as a 5 season show from the start, and the creator knew the ending as soon as he began filming the first episode.

Last season still ended up weaker because the main storyline ended in season 4, as they didn't know whether they would receive funding for a fifth.
But there were still enough plot threads left open for season 5 to have a satisfying conclusion.

I know nothing about Goths other than some of the girls make me feel funny in the pants, but I have heard there are some very bitchy kerfuffles about whether black people can be Goth and how a lot of them feel shut out of the subculture. I have absolutely no doubt this was done as a sop to that especially ridiculous slapfight.

They were gonna make a black character no matter what because every show now has a black protagonist, specially black women getting shoved up into everything, bonus points if it is a black lesbian.

I bet Neil Gaiman was all on board too but its still insulting, ruins an aesthetic and the least an adaptation should do is be true to the source in the basic things. This blackwashing of every cool character is demoralizing, i am not going to watch that show but seeing this stuff is still annoying.

It's so much worse when the original creator goes woke, because more often than not, they haven't changed – their industry has. And they're just saying the things they've always wanted to say anyway. So I can't help but feel like it tarnishes the original work.

Doctor Who fans know this all too well – or if they don't, they soon will. Percy Jackson also comes to mind in this regard.

I feel like if Gaiman wanted to make Death a black butch dyke he easily could have done it in the original comic. But he didn't and the character was great as she was. is more like he fell into a bandwagon and is doing it for current year pandering which is insulting to long time fans. Same as J.K Rowling retconning Hermione as black for brownie points. In the case of Death is like making Superman´s costume purple, an extremely iconic design that is ruined now.

I don't actually know if black Death was a Gaiman was on board with or just a Producer decision like in most shows but i wouldn't put it past him, he is certainly the type.

It's sad that the audio book version had mostly better cast than the show.

He married Amanda Palmer of course he's a dumb leftist cuck.

Death the Negress doesn't even look goth! She just looks like some random black chick dragged onto the set for diversity points! Maybe the racially-exclusive goths were on to something…

I still cannot forgive him for playing defense in regards to George R. R. Martin's rabid procrastination. Yes, creators are allowed to have personal lives, but claiming that fans are awful for expecting a writer to do his job instead of bitching on the internet is absolutely childish.

That's actually a really good point. I have seen black women pull off the Goth look just fine. They're just not pale. Why the hell didn't they keep the character design? It's got to be one of the most iconic of all non-superhero comic book characters.

Are the oh so progressive producers subtly implying the people who say Goths can't be black are right?!?!

No, they just don't respect the source material in the slightest and will change anything just because they felt like it. Be happy Dream wasn't reworked into an Pakistanese Muslim transgender cripple, and that's just because they thought they couldn't get away with it.

Now something that almost was ruined for me was Fallout New Vegas. Seeing nonstop stupid memes from political spergs bitching about the politics of the game online really just annoyed the shit out of me. Most people who are way too passionate about the politics in fallout often come off to me as pretentious and insufferable, especially if they try to use it as a reference for current events going on. I fixed this by unfollowing some twitter pages and content blocking any controversial mods regarding politics on nexus (though thankfully the Nexus moderators have finally been cracking down on that).
Holy fuck, congratulations to the Nexus moderators. I don't know much about them or the modding community, but this is not at all how I'd expect the moderators of any special-interest community to behave with regard to woke politics, etc. Whenever I come across an ideological disagreement between an online community and the people in charge of it, it almost always seems to be the other way round.

Ahh... I just remembered that I made this post. Context in case you've been living under a rock for the last week. And with that, I finally feel vindicated. But not in the way I'd like to be.

It can be traced back to when Elianora (a modder and lolcow in her own right) decided to make a black lives matter mod for fallout 4 about a year ago and it started a domino effect of people making response mods or parody like 'blue lives matter', 'ghoul lives matter', or 'synth lives matter' in response before the entire thing devolved into one gigantic shit flinging contest of clout seekers. This even got her to delete the mod.

So it was either bend over backwards and give into demands of special interest groups, or deal with the constant drama of people shitting up the mod files with low effort mods (most of them were just basic retexture mods that can be done in an hour with photoshop) and endless forum drama.

There was also some drama as well over some troons making trans pride flags for FNV a couple months back and similar effect with people making super straight pride flags or straight pride flags in response.

Well, it actually seems somewhat in-character that a site like that would remove a mod that removes Pride flags. Again, I'm not familiar with Nexus or its community, but if they have a blanket ban on "political" mods, then a mod removing political statements that were added by the game's developers could be interpreted as a political act (which, TBH, it kinda is).

The fact that they banned the user who made it, however, shows me this response was disproportionate and was done to set an example. That, and many other have also pointed out Nexus contains far more controversial mods than this one.

That's the thing: Nexus mods doesn't have a blanket ban on political mods. They removed the mod because they support "diversity" and "inclusion".
