When I finished 8th grade we had a promotion ceremony. The teachers and office staff were very strict in letting us know that this was by no means a graduation, though it was very much like a graduation ceremony. The cap and gown was strictly forbidden and everyone received a stupid (and 100% useless) piece of paper that said something like "Good job passing 8th grade" on it that took all of 5 minutes to be made in Word. This was also the type of school where some/many teachers would just pass certain students so they wouldn't have to deal with them anymore so there you go.

The stupid, useless piece of paper wasn't required for getting into high school and I just tossed it. Even my mom didn't want to save it as a memento.

The worst thing to see in this thread (and others) is dead bodies being mechanically or medically forced to "live". If I had any religion I'd consider it blasphemy, or evil. It's disgusting.

The irony in it is that more often than not it's the extremely religious types who do this shit. Signing the opposite of DNRs for their family members and keeping them in vent farms while unironically saying about how it's God's will and that it's not up to people to decide when others will die because it's not natural.

Nah plenty of women do similar things, especially NPD women. Powerlevel but while he was never diagnosed, I don't think my dad being autistic was unrelated to my narcmom choosing to have a relationship with him. actually no, i busted my ass advocating for these folks but the higher ups ; ( management, case workers, dept. heads ) would not listen, and when a client had an outburst for example , they always jumped right to '' behavior problem'' , or ''mental health'' instead of realizing they were hella frustrated and were clearly communicating that. so while i may rag on the speds, make my jokes and snarky comments, i did care, and i did everything i could until i just could not take it anymore. but its how you survive ad keep sane ironically in a field like that : especially when worker and client alike are ending up in one no-win situation after another . :-/

From what I’ve seen, there’s still always a power imbalance between someone functional enough to be the worker and someone who needs their help to achieve something better than bare survival. Some clients are pains in the ass and burnout is huge in those careers because nobody is being properly supported, but you can really read the difference between snark for venting sake, and dehumanizing comments where there is no respect left for someone being taken advantage of in a system you admit thinks they deserve it. I hope service workers find a way to ease the problem of burnout so they can stop using that as an excuse for when they decide special needs children deserve dehumanizing. Oh sorry, they like it.

I’ve seen lots of disabled people wind up in horrible power levely situations that are blamed on them because the support worker thinks some bullshit like “oh they like it” or feels their job and covering their fuckup is more important than that disabled person’s means of survival. And that’s why I’m mad on the internet today.

No that's a universal trend. No matter the culture heavily deformed babies were left out to die. Women who could not end their pregnancies with herbal abortifacients usually smothered the baby if it was deformed. If healthy, it was usually given to a church or other orphanage.

The sub Saharan and African countries you speak of are not Muslim. They’re either local African religions or ricebowl Christians who retain their pre-Christian beliefs. Newborns yeah, but older disabled kids were usually spared. Even healthy newborns would get smothered if they weren't wanted/were unable to be cared for, especially since just leaving the baby somewhere was often effectively infanticide since survival rates for foundlings historically weren't great.

I'll have to check that video out! Looks interesting.

I've mentioned the skeleton found in Florida some years back of a boy who had spina bifida and osteomyelitis of the leg (which was probably his cause of death) who was about 14 years old. The interviewee (IIRC, this was either PBS or NatGeo) said that most children with disabilities like this were simply left to die, but he may have been kept alive because he and/or his family had some kind of cultural or religious significance, so that's why they took care of him.

Before cutting to the next segment, they showed an artist's rendition of two men in what was their surmised ceremonial dress, carrying the boy on a stretcher made from two sticks, and an animal skin.
