Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

God, arcade emulation is a fucking pain. You have to decide on whether your romset should be merged/split/non-merged/full non-merged, then commit to using either MAME or FinalBurn, then decide which version/core of MAME or FinalBurn you want, then hunt down the correct romset for your specific version of your specific emulator, then make sure you never ever update the emulator or the romset because God forbid the devs just decide to not make your roms unplayable because of arbitrary name changes. And if you decide you really need to update, better make sure you learn how to use a program that parses your entire 100GB+ romset so it can rename everything to match the new names. Then it all gets even more complicated if you have multiple devices that can’t all handle the same versions of MAME/FinalBurn.

Is there an easier way to do all this, or is it just “get the latest MAME, download the full set, and stick with it”? I just want to play stuff going up to the early 90s, plus some mid-late 90s. The MAME 2003-Plus RetroArch core looks like a good compromise, but it’s missing some of the games I actually care about.
Imagine how great it was on the OG Xbox. You downloaded MAME and whatever roms you like, select one and it just played them. And the joypad was NEVER mapped to fucking keyboard bullshit by default. MAME and RetroArch are light years away from the experience that some retards hacked together 20 years ago.

For anyone wondering, that’s the FunKey S. 240x240 screen so consoles have to be squished horizontally, and 50hz so you get a lower frame rate, albeit full speed. But for what it’s worth, it is a fully-functioning emulation handheld on a key ring with a GBA SP clamshell design.
I just try to get completed sets from places like arcadepunks.com. The only downside is most of them are 1000 games with 900 of them being crap.
That’s why I don’t bother with full sets in my main collection. I still have them just in case, but it feels much more satisfying to scroll through a list of 100 games for a system that you’ve picked out and know you’ll enjoy, compared to digging through a mountain full of games that you know you’ll never play.

That's why I LOVED the Retropie B.A.S.E image.

Just a 8 gig image with the top 100 games for each system. No junk, all the good stuff. Sadly the image come out in 2017 and has never been updated for the Raspberry Pi 4.

So I don't know where else to ask this on the site and I'm stupid when it comes to emulation so: How do I emulate Animal Crossing New Leaf on a PC? Again sorry for a probably stupid question but I have a feeling I would get better answers here than somewhere else on the internet.

Then you have to find the ROM somewhere and I don't know where 3DS roms can be found.

They could have made it twice as big and it still would've been keychain-sized... supergluing a GBA micro to a keyring seems more practical

Yech, that's what favorites lists are for... e.g. I've got maybe ~30 or so in my MAME favorites folder, and they didn't get them all in their curated list. There are some admirable deep cuts in there (Charlie Ninja, alright) but I won't leave myself at the mercy of normalfag tastes.

try with pleasuredome. That's how I got my romlist. the issue is that they're as autistic as those Mugen Archive fellows.
But I agree, Arcade emulation sucks still. there still isn't a decent repository where to download roms, like r-roms.

De gustibus. When it comes to arcade, I'm fine with downloading a romset with random shit (as long as it's not video poker and slot machines shit), so when I don't know what to play I can try typing a random word and see if anything decent comes out. That's how I discovered R-Type.

I wear glasses, and I can just feel the eyestrain from this photo. Not to mention the size of the damn buttons, not only do they look so fragile, they look like a real pain to push. Good luck trying to hit the right ones consistently. I'd rather have a decorative but non-functional handheld as a keychain than a functional one that's actually too small to really use.

For the ROM Google hshop. They have packages for modded 3DS but they can be installed on Citra. Actual .3ds ROMs work better for Citra, but I have no idea where to get those.

I took a few years off from retro gaming as a hobby and recently walked into a locally owned retro gaming shop to see completely normal GameCube selling for $100 dollars. Animal crossing which was a very common game was selling for $60. It honestly shocked me. I picked up my gray GCN for $40 at that same shop a few years prior. Does anyone know what the fuck happened in the past 3-4 years with prices? Some of the games I've had for years quadrupled in price

💜💉Corona-chan💉💜-> tons of people are suddenly stuck at home with nothing to do as the entire planet locks down -> Everything retrogaming skyrockets in value -> government gives everyone and their grandma gibs -> tons and tons of games got scooped up -> high demand + low supply = high prices

Also, it's the year 2022, and Gamecube came out in 2001, so therefore the people in college today are the generation that grew up with Gamecube, therefore they're now buying them up and raising prices. Also, Nintendo has never released a Gamecube virtual console on anything, so tons of games (including Animal Crossing) are still only obtainable through either piracy or old discs.

So, you know, if there are any Wii games you want, you might wanna grab 'em. They're not gonna get any cheaper for a long time.

Is anyone here nifty with emulating DS on a Android tab? Just got one with a cell-phone purchase and i thought "why no" but from what i've heard it is quiet an ordeal to get it to work?

I have the feeling we are 5 years off from gamecube games being on virtual console. Zoomers need to figure out how to emulate and to download Dolphin. If you're paying more then the original cost of a game 20 years after it's release it's simply not worth it imo. I love Pikimin, Sunshine, Luigi's mansion but paying more then $60 for them? Just not worth it.

You could check out Lemuroid for DS and a handful of other consoles. It doesn't have a lot of enhancements and things to fiddle with but it's easier than trying to deal with retroarch if you are just wanting something easy to get up and running

There's DraStic that I like using although it's $5 in the play store unless you want to get it elsewhere and keep up with that.

There's also melonDS that I have heard some people like but the version on the play store is "unofficial" and looks like it was last updated a year ago vs the actual updated version
