Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

Been playing a lot of retro stuff lately, and Yuzu switch emulator which so far has been playing BotW and Links Awakening flawlessly for me. Just want to share my experience with a new controller I bought. Usually I use a Nyko AirFlo ex that I've had for almost 20 years. It's still in perfect condition and I had no reason to change it up except for a usb n64 controller. Well since I've been playing the switch emulator I wanted something with motion controls instead of having to dedicate an old smart phone to the task which was extremely janky. So I got an 8BitDo SN30 Pro+, thing is pretty awesome and for the price it's definitely worth it. I wish I got one sooner, it was only 35USD on amazon at the time. You can remap all the buttons to custom keys or macros, and adjust the sensitivity of each stick independently. It was worth the 35 bucks.

What's the best retro fishing game? I've always gone back to Bassin's Black Bass but looking for something different. Not looking for anything sim like. Preferably PS1 but Dreamcast/PS2 is cool too.

Little bit of cross posting from switch thread and little update to my above post about yuzu. I got a steam deck and was able to get both yuzu and cemu working on it. Unfortunately yuzu(switch) has no online support yet, except for private unofficial servers. However Cemu does, so you can play on official servers with your nintendo account. Every game I've tested so far is working fine except for pikmin 3 on cemu which gave me a couple random odd brief audio glitches, though they haven't repeated. The first handheld I had was a tiger mortal kombat piece of shit when I was a kid..... big difference.

Never had many problems with it, in my experience. I just didn't know other newer/better emulaters existed until fairly recently. If you're still using VBA right now, you probably don't need to switch

The latest model are clear plastic too, wish they had that option when I got mine, that purple one looks pretty sweet. I really miss that early 2000s clear plastic design aesthetic in tech

yea, they didn't have the sn30 pro+ in the clear purple when I ordered mine, only the pro 2, I was tempted to get it but I just went with the pro+ in black. Still it looks better than my old reliable that I've been using forever.

It definitely doesn't highlight the early 2000s aesthetic but I've had it since 2003 and it's legit the only controller I've had and used since. It's still in basically perfect condition. I only replaced it because it lacks motion controls, and swapping to an old cellphone for specific parts of games was getting old.

8bitdo are better than Nintendo's own controllers now and cheaper too. Glad you are enjoying it

yeah, since the Pro+ the 8bitdo controller are now pretty decent.
I still have a SF30, damn what a mistake of a controller. It doesn't have drift issues, but the inputs get sometimes "stuck."
One annoyance I have with them is that amazon's shipping from us to anywhere else is absurdly high and that they don't yet have controllers stocked in the EU warehouses as well, they always take ages before stocking all the non-us warehouses. It feels like Koei's absolutely special individual's regional pricing.

Speaking of controllers, I don't know if anyone cares, but you can use the Wiimote and all of its peripherals as standard controller on PC through the Dolphin Bar. It is especially nice what that PDP controller shaped like a gamecube classic controller attachment.

I heard exlene and powera (wireless) (and a wired version too) made some new switch controllers that are shaped like gamecube's ones but both have lots of problems, according to the review page on amazon (despite both being 4.5/4.8 out of 5).

Oh, while I'm talking about Nintendo, have you heard the rumors about a possible Nintendo Switch Pro/2? (New Nintendo Switch 3DXL lol)

I hate to interject here but the 8bitdo controllers are better in abolutely every way except that extensive HD rumble thing that the Switch pro controllers have. They feel much sturdier, the sticks feel indestructable and the triggers are significantly better. It's the perfect blend of Playstation style controllers only if they adapted most of the improvements that modern controllers have brought to the table.

I've been unable to go back to the Switch Pro controllers after my 8bitdo but just want to point that out in case anyone here has some massive autistic requirement over HD rumble.

God, arcade emulation is a fucking pain. You have to decide on whether your romset should be merged/split/non-merged/full non-merged, then commit to using either MAME or FinalBurn, then decide which version/core of MAME or FinalBurn you want, then hunt down the correct romset for your specific version of your specific emulator, then make sure you never ever update the emulator or the romset because God forbid the devs just decide to not make your roms unplayable because of arbitrary name changes. And if you decide you really need to update, better make sure you learn how to use a program that parses your entire 100GB+ romset so it can rename everything to match the new names. Then it all gets even more complicated if you have multiple devices that can’t all handle the same versions of MAME/FinalBurn.

Is there an easier way to do all this, or is it just “get the latest MAME, download the full set, and stick with it”? I just want to play stuff going up to the early 90s, plus some mid-late 90s. The MAME 2003-Plus RetroArch core looks like a good compromise, but it’s missing some of the games I actually care about.

That's pretty much it. I love all those vintage arcade games from the 80s and 90s but MAME can be a huge pain in the ass because of all the issues you listed. I've never found an easier way of doing things.

if you really want to emulate arcade games, especially 90's/80's stuff, just download FightCade 2 and get the .json rom file so it automatically gives you the correct rom file when you enter a game room for the first time.

After you have the rom, you can play offline on FBNeo whenever you feel like it, or you can just set yourself away so you won't get challenges in the rooms

Yeah, you're doing it the same way I've always done it. That's just the way MAME is. And I ain't about to tackle Retroarch's MAME support, oh hell no.
