It's probably a little of both.
Steven is a manipulator and he can be charming when he tries to be but the inner asshole in him can't keep it up for too long. According to her, at the beginning, he was very sweet and likeable. But as time went by the asshole grew stronger and he felt it wasn't necessary to keep up the charade.
And then as a lot of people think she was also using him for pills so I would guess she's a little fucked up herself.
