Ok so here is how Leafland does it.I believe that's only for very specific reasons - none that apparently apply to Dood. (see: domestic violence)
This type seems more likely if any.
I don't know specifically how Leafland does it, but in the US there has to be a lot of documentation to support official leaves of absence (covered by Federal law) - like you can't just tell your boss you would like to take weeks off because you're sick. You would have to have paperwork from a doctor saying you're sick, can't perform job functions, and can't come back to work until X day.
USA and Canada have no similarities when it comes to leave. USA works employees to the bone with fuck all security.
Facts:
Canada has EI leave which is 16 weeks paid government leave $638 per week if you quit your job due to stress, illness, domestic violence, caring duties, etc. It is a single form to fill out and a phone conversation.
Quebec has 10 weeks domestic violence leave at full pay.
D2 also has her own workplace leave, which although only legally require 3 days paid sick leave include 26 weeks unpaid leave where her job cannot replace her and must make her role available to her when she returns (most people are on EI pay over this time period).
D2 is also accruing annual leave 4 weeks per year- so she may have banked up months and months of leave.
