While KF was down and I was unable to find the .onion link, all I had left was read Twitter/Reddit. I was told multiple times that KF had migrated it's servers to Russia, and now China apparently.
It seems that I was wrong, if I was misled, imagine others who know nothing about this whole situation.

VanWa (Van-Wei-Tech), the current DDOS/CDN is a front company for Tencent. They pretend to be US based but are really run from a sweatshop in Shanghai.

The interesting thing is it looks like the DNS servers are offline. I suspect instead of going after the site they went after the 2 DNS servers(DDOS maybe?). Still seems reachable with a hosts file.

Is it recommended that people modify their hosts files too now, or is the IP situation pessimistic enough to not make it worth it?

Not an expert on the matter, but what if you use Guerrillamail for that? They save emails at most for an hour and they don't need registration. You can even visit their website via TOR. Take a look yourself, if you're not familiar with them. Guerrillamail. Click the "WTF?"-Button, to get an explanation of what they are doing.

Get a burner tier real inbox like cock.li or lolcow.email. If you can afford to spend some money on it, maybe something like simplelogin or anonaddy which are forwarders that can encrypt any emails you receive so your email provider can't read them. Of course major fine print with forwarders however - you have to trust them to not scan your emails before encrypting them, and they might not hide the metadata/headers. Or if you self host the forwarder then you have to dox yourself to the domain registrar to get your domain. Or if you use one of the privacy focused domain registrars, what they actually do is buy the domain in their name and let you use it, so you don't really own it and it can be seized.

... Yeah, email is a mess. It's impossible to have something be secure, reliable and anonymous, and trying is expensive.

I'm 99% certain Null is playing whack-a-mole with the issues(both technical and political), so any suggestion of what helped yesterday will not be true today, or tomorrow. If things go away for a while then check in with Telegram or Poa.st and see what the current state is.

No, but self hosting it requires doxing yourself to more infrastructure providers, and if you want outgoing deliverability then have fun navigating that mess.

I'd recommend lolcow.email for your KF account because even if they don't encrypt your mail for you, their owner is not very likely to be upset at you for using KF. You don't need to encrypt your mail to be safe there. I'm not even sure if the email technically "leaves" the server.

Downside, you can't access the website right now for the same reason you can't access KF.net or the warrant canaries. Lolcow is not going to fuck you over, but they aren't reliable either.

I wonder if people who had configured thunderbird (or other mail clients) to access their cowmail are still able to pull via the clients or if the service is 100% dead..
